i like critical role, and like the article says, i believe they are good people who have good intentions - but intent =/= impact. I personally feel like they need to do better, and are capable of doing the work to do better. 
The article makes a great point about how this appropriation-free world leads to, essentially, a "white-washed" culture with the aesthetics OF that culture, and that the consultants may have helped - but we're STILL ultimately seeing the world through a white person's eyes.
Sure they're a group of friends, but they're not just that - they're part of a company with A LOT of wealth and influence in the TTRPG community. What they do IMMENSELY impacts many TTRPG folks of color who have worked tirelessly to decolonize the space.
The problem is that they are profiting off of a minority culture. I think it'd be much better if we could experience a rich cultural setting through a cast of SWANA folks. The setting they could have avoided, or they could have had different cast members for the setting.
They are a big franchise with minimal diversity, being that their main cast is all white. There is only one long-standing guest of color currently. Mostly white cast = mostly white story. We should have more BIPOC roleplaying their characters in their culture.
Also while we're at it, don't forget that a large portion of CR fans openly harassed and ridiculed @/EvilCleverDog with SO many insensitive and racist months ago when [redacted] decided to QRT her concerns with a dismissive comment to his hundreds of thousands of followers
Everyone saying they think the author's complaints are bullshit and "just another reason to shit on CR" seem like they are committed to misunderstanding or misinterpreting the authors concerns and where those concerns are coming from so they can dismiss it as "hate"
"they aren't being appropriative!" Cultural appropriation isn't the problem, the problem is that MENA/SWANA people don't actually get to roleplay or have a spotlight in the setting they contributed to making
