🚨🚨 Sound the Alarm… Again🚨🚨

The Clark County School District is still losing teachers/licensed staff faster than ever before!

It’s so much worse than you think.

Read the whole thread!

1/? #NVed
2/?

From Aug. through Jan. there have been 67% more licensed/teaching staff separations than a typical year over the same time period.

Almost 300 more than the next highest year!
3/?
There is a MUCH BIGGER difference between licensed staff quitting this year and the next highest year than between the next highest year and the lowest year over the last decade!

There is an unprecedented exit of teachers from CCSD this year!
4/?
On avg, at this point in the school year, just over 10 licensed staff have left because they are “Dissatisfied with the District”

This school year 5 times as many licensed/teaching staff have left CCSD for that reason.

Almost triple the next highest year.
5/?
Compared to an average year,
3.5 times more licensed staff have left this school year to go teach in another Nevada district.

They’re not leaving the teaching profession, they’re leaving CCSD.
6/?
This shows the change in licensed staff during the school year from Oct to Jan

Typically, CCSD gains staff during the first half of the year. Look what happened this year!

As of Jan 1, CCSD had less licensed staff than at any point during a school year under Jara’s tenure
7/?

Is this “Big Quit” happening nationally?

Let’s check…
8/?
Texas just put out a report last week saying they have the lowest teacher attrition rate that they’ve had since 2011.

And they awarded more teacher certifications in the last year.
9/?

In Chicago Public Schools, the nation’s 3rd largest school district, teacher vacancy rates have been improving throughout this school year.
10/?

In Washoe, Nevada’s second-largest district, they are reporting a teacher turnover rate lower than the national average.
11/?

There is No "Big Quit" in K-12 Education

Chad Aldeman, of Georgetown’s Edunomics Lab, wrote last month that there is no evidence of a mass exodus of staff in education this school year based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data.
12/?

If there is currently NO evidence of a national teacher exodus, why do people keep saying it’s happening?
13/?

The Rand Corporation got a ton of national attention last year when they reported that 1 in 4 teachers said they were likely to leave their job by the end of the school year

But it NEVER happened

25% of teachers did not leave the workforce
14/?

Wall Street Journal published an article claiming teachers were quitting at higher rates than all other industries.

Then they put out a correction that it was based on “Private education services” data, which does NOT include K-12 public education teachers!
15/?

Yes, you are hearing stories of districts having trouble filling vacancies.

But trouble filling vacancies is NOT the same as a mass exodus of existing staff.
16/?

Here are current teaching vacancies we could find around the country.

Let’s take a closer look at the vacancy rate in CCSD…
17/?

In December, CCSD said they had 850 vacancies and that 97-98% of licensed positions were filled.

Let’s check if that can possibly be true…
18/?

In December, CCSD did not have a 2% vacancy rate.

CCSD had a 4.4% vacancy rate.

Let’s take a deeper look at how that compares to the rates across the nation that we could find.
19/?

CCSD’s vacancy rate is 47% higher than Philadelphia, the next highest rate we could find.

It’s worse than it looks…
20/?

This is what licensed staffing counts look like in Philadelphia in the month of January over the last 5 years.
21/?

This is what licensed staffing counts look like in CCSD in the month of January over the last 5 years

LOWEST count of licensed staff during the school year in the last 5 years.

In comparison, Philadelphia’s licensed staff count is UP year over year.
22/?

Vacancy rates do not tell the whole story!

Philadelphia & CCSD do not have the same staffing ratios.

CCSD had 850 vacancies, however,

To match Philadelphia's ratio of a licensed staff for every 11.9 students, CCSD would need to hire 6,821 licensed staff!
23/?
To put it another way

If so many quit in Philly that they were at CCSD’s ratios, then Philadelphia would have a 27% vacancy rate

Don’t let people tell you what is happening in CCSD is happening nationally

IT IS NOT COMPARABLE
24/?

CCSD typically gains teachers through the school year & hits their peak teacher/licensed staff count between Feb – Apr

CCSD currently has:

- 522 less licensed staff than Mar 2020
- 190 less licensed staff than Sep. 2021
- Already over 1,100 vacancies to fill
25/?
It’s about to get worse!

These are historical avg teacher/licensed staff separations by month for the last decade

The major wave of teacher separations has NOT started yet

If staff continue to leave at the current rate,
CCSD will lose another 1,700+ by the end of July
26/?
We have found NO evidence that the mass exodus of teachers being experienced in CCSD is happening nationally.

What is happening in CCSD is a colossal failure of leadership!
27/?

There is a reason the Governor said families deserve better than Superintendent Jesus Jara.
28/?

There is a reason the Henderson City Council is extremely frustrated that they cannot get any response to their needs from CCSD leadership.
29/?

There is a reason that the City of North Las Vegas Mayor, John Lee, is angry with CCSD leadership and does not believe they are following state law.
30/?
You don’t have to agree on a solution with all these people… they don’t agree with each other.

But you have to willingly keep your head in the sand to not agree with the reason for the problem…

There is a colossal failure of leadership in the Clark County School District
31/?

People excusing the failed leadership of CCSD are hurting our children.

Thousands of students in CCSD do not have a full-time experienced teacher.

Our children need effective leadership NOW
32/?
Time is up. Hiring has started for the next school year.

CCSD’s failures are a massive NEVADA problem.

With a shrinking teacher pipeline, as CCSD burns through more staff it becomes harder for EVERYONE in #NVEd to find qualified teacher candidates.
33/?
This is a call to action to ensure every child starts next year with a licensed teacher

The public needs to know:

- Where are we at right now?
- What is CCSD doing to turn things around?
- What do success AND failure look like?

We don't want promises.
We want results!
34/34

No one has more experience with Nevada K-12 education data than the staff at Data Insight Partners.

We have NEVER seen anything like what is happening in CCSD right now.

The repercussions of this will be felt by our children for years to come if we don’t act.

The Twitter account for the Superintendent of the 5th largest school district in the US allegedly posted a crude, misogynistic message.

We don’t know if it’s real, fake, or a hack.

But we’re good at going through data, so let’s review what’s out there…

5:41am @Kbelknap822 takes a screenshot of the tweet that was posted 20 seconds earlier

25 minutes later, at 6:06 AM, Kenny posted the screenshot

Seems unlikely he thought to forge ALL those details

But hard to say for sure🤷‍♂️ Image
@Kbelknap822 3/?

If the screenshot is real, it seems there are 2 options…

Either somebody without access hacked the account and posted the message

OR

Somebody with authorized access to the Superintendent account posted the message Image

🔎Let's Take a Look🔎

How bad have things gotten in CCSD that the Speaker of the State Assembly is calling on Superintendent Jesus Jara to resign?

Let's look at the latest data fiasco.
No, not the data breach…

🧵1/? Image
2/?

CCSD just published the teacher vacancies report for last school year.

It reports that CCSD averaged 1,583 vacancies for just general fund teacher/licensed staff positions in schools.

That’s a whopping 12.3% vacancy rate!!! 🤯 Image
3/?

Here are the teacher vacancies CCSD reported for the last 5 years:

2019: 275
2020: 686
2021: 824
2022: 903
2023: 1,583

This is what CCSD reported.
We have done no calculations to aggregate these numbers.
We only put them in a chart. Image

🎄Merry Excusemas🎄

If ifs & buts were candy & nuts, every day would be Christmas for Jara apologists.

"…but COVID"
"...but historically"
"…but but but"

This thread is too long, but let’s get at it…
1/? #NVed #CCSD Image
2/?
“…but COVID”

Yes, reading scores went down for the whole country.

Nevada’s scores dropped DOUBLE the national average, AFTER closing a massive & persistent learning gap

How much of that is attributable to CCSD… Image
3/?

“...but everyone experienced learning loss”

CCSD’s drop in 4th grade reading was over DOUBLE what it was for:

- National public-school average
- Large urban district average
- The rest of Nevada

Yes, everybody had a setback, but it was NOT the same Image

🔥Results Are In🔥

CCSD's Accountability data was released today!

Let's do a quick review of the results & school star ratings...

CCSD posted its LOWEST EVER reading proficiency rates on the SBAC

Not surprising... over last couple years:

- Drove out 1,000s of teachers
- Rampant vacancies
- Paid experienced leaders to leave
- Community trust broken
- Teachers & Principals calling for Supt to be fired Image
3/?

Only 1 in 5 kids headed to high school are proficient in math

Not surprising... over last couple years:

- Drove out 1,000s of teachers
- Rampant vacancies
- Paid experienced leaders to leave
- Community trust broken
- Teachers & Principals calling for Supt to be fired Image

💡We may have finally figured out how CCSD produced this completely inaccurate & irresponsible data point.

They have once again shown they have no competence in working with data or communicating with the public.

Read the thread for details…

2/?

Here are the official grad rates for the Class of 2022 for all of the high schools in North Las Vegas.

Depending on which schools you include the actual grad rate is between 74% - 85%.

So how did CCSD come up with 51% ???
3/?

You need to add over 1,600 students to NLV’s student count without adding ANY graduates to get the total overall grad rate down to 51.5%

Let’s put that into context…

No more excuses!

Read the whole thread to understand how CCSD has been driving #NVed in the WRONG direction

We'll review where we've come from and how we've gotten all turned around

This morning’s NY Times referenced data from The Educational Opportunity Project

They've charted the change in average reading scores since the pandemic

Each dot is a school district

Higher dot, reading performance improved.
Lower dot, reading performance worsened. Image
3/?

The highlighted bubbles represent the 10 largest districts in the US (NY did not have data)

Higher bubbles = Students have done better in reading since the pandemic

Lower bubbles = Students have done worse in reading since the pandemic

Guess which one is Clark County… Image
