When William Henry Harrison ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ joined the military, the man who signed off on his commission was none other than......

George Washington ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ.

Washington was a friend of Harrison's deceased father, Benjamin Harrison, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

William Henry Harrison's ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ political legacy is his passion for getting federal aid for disabled veterans and surviving families of those killed in war.

He would even invite to dinner the widows and children of his dead comrades

One of the angles pushed by the William Henry Harrison ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ and John Tyler ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ ticket in the 1840 Election was their heritage: Both of their fathers fought "side by side in maintaining the rights of their country in the days of the Revolution."

William Henry Harrison ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ was one of the first presidential candidates to go out and give campaign speeches and hold rallies.

Due to constant attacks by Democrats about his age and health, Whig leaders asked William Henry Harrison's ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ doctor to release a public report on his health and fitness - a Presidential first!

The doctor declared him to have "bodily vigor as good as most men his age."

The cover of the 1840 Whig Party booklet was able to be torn off & posted for election purposes. Promoting William Henry Harrison and John Tyler ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ, it also showed his opponent, President Martin Van Buren ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ.

Stories behind some of the popular pictures, portraits, and moments of our Presidents

Todayโ€™s subject:
Herbert Hoover ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Meets
Adolf Hitler

Enjoy the thread below โฌ‡๏ธ!

Like many people, I was just as shocked when I learned that a meeting took place between the recently defeated ex-President Herbert Hoover ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ and the fledgling leader of Germany, Adolf Hitler

#POTUS โฌ‡๏ธ Image
I suppose some context would be appropriateโ€ฆ

The year was 1938 and Herbert Hoover ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ was traveling through Europe to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the end of โ€œThe Great Warโ€ (WWI)

Every now and then I like to highlight characters in history who crossed paths with American Presidents in some way, shape or form.

Todayโ€ฆ
Iโ€™d like to talk **briefly** about a lawyer named Lambdin Milliganโ€ฆ

Enjoy the thread! ๐Ÿงต

#POTUS ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Image
Milligan was an Ohio boy who ended up studying law, eventually passing the bar in Ohio. He was actually classmates with Edwin Stanton! Stanton would go onto be Secretary of War under Abraham Lincoln ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

But I digressโ€ฆkeep reading!

#POTUS ๐Ÿงต Image
Milligan moved to Indiana to continue his law career. There he involved himself in heavy โ€œstates rightsโ€ politics, and followed guys like John Calhoun and Martin Van Buren ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Milligan eventually identified as a โ€œCopperheadโ€โ€”a Democrat opposing the Civil War & Lincoln

While it can be argued the Vietnam War touched many Presidents - it can be argued further that it impacted the presidency - and health - of Lyndon Baines Johnson ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ the hardest

โ€œI guess weโ€™ve got no choice, but it scares the death out of me. I think everybodyโ€™s going to think, โ€˜weโ€™re landing the Marines, weโ€™re off to battle.โ€™โ€

The 22nd AMENDMENT :

The Amendment limiting the election of a President of the United States to two terms finds its roots in George Washington ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ, who opted only for two terms as the first President of the United States.

Enjoy this fun thread on the 22nd Amendment!

#POTUS ๐Ÿ“ƒ
Although there were many in the tradition of George Washington ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธwho served only two-terms, it wasnโ€™t until Franklin Roosevelt ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ was elected to a 3rd and 4th term that concerns over unlimited terms began to be taken seriously.
#POTUS โฌ‡๏ธ
The 1946 midterm elections united conservatives from both parties, Republicans and Democrats, to propose the 22nd Amendment in 1947.

It was ratified by the states in 1951 under Harry Truman ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ.

Interestingly, Oklahoma and Massachusetts voted to reject the Amendment ๐Ÿค”

"OPERATION PAPERCLIP" was a top-secret program of the US Government where ~1,600 German scientists (most of them Nazis) were brought to the US after World War II mainly to defeat the Soviets in the Cold War &ย Space Race.

It was authorized by Harry Truman ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ in 1946.
#POTUS โฌ‡๏ธ
Harry Truman ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ forbade anyone who was "a member of the Nazi party and more than a nominal participant in its activities, or an active supporter of Nazism" to participate in the program.

To this effect, background checks on the scientists were ordered but...

#POTUS โฌ‡๏ธ
...against Truman's ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ orders the scientists' Nazi backgrounds were scrubbed

After the Nuremberg Trials word got out, so the Army did damage control by distributing "wholesome" pictures of the men w/families & pre-approving all media content related to the scientists
