1/4 Many thanks ⁦@ChrisJansing⁩ for hosting me on ⁦@RuhleOnMSNBC⁩ my rationale for holding off another 2 weeks on lifting mask restrictions is as follows. We’ll know by then where we’re heading with Covid. Two different scenarios and we might know by then…
2/4 Scenario 1: covid continues its steep declines or deceleration and we reach a nadir, that’s a best case scenario and masks restrictions can probably lift
3/4 Scenario 2: Following BA.2 sub variant which is 30-50% more transmissible than original omicron variant if you can believe that. Now 3.6% of the US virus isolates are BA.2, it’s crunch time and we’ll know in 2 weeks if we have another tiger by the tail
4/4 same with pediatric vaccine decision for 6 mos to 4 years, whether or not we’re in BA.2 storm by Feb 15 could sway FDA advisory committee decision about EUA after 2 doses or wait for 3 dose data, and of course data on protection
5/4 Finally, many thanks to @ChrisJansing and @RuhleOnMSNBC for your thoughtful congratulations on the @AmerMedicalAssn that was so nice!

We have just reached 80,000 COVID-19 deaths in the state of Texas: My graphic interpretation of the COVID-19 deaths before vaccines were widely available ("the virus") vs deaths after May 1 resulting from vaccine refusal and defiance ("anti-science")
The trajectory of the deaths is from NY Times COVID-19 tracker for State of Texas, also here's a background article from @TexasTribune based on data from @TexasDSHS texastribune.org/2021/11/08/tex…
Detailed discussion and my comments @HoustonChron ICUs still full as Houston COVID-19 cases continue to plummet houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-t…

Here’s why this is important. The nation still has tough Covid challenges ahead, and we urgently need strong leadership across multiple HHS agencies. Will summarize some of them in the attached tweets… cnn.com/2022/02/06/pol…
1: BA.2 some evidence that it’s even more transmissible than the original omicron which is more transmissible than delta, and so forth. If it takes hold like it did in Denmark it will slow the descent of original omicron here
2: Once we get through this omicron wave we’re likely still vulnerable to future waves of as yet unknown variants of concern. We need a planning strategy of how to manage a potential new variant in Texas and US Southern states this summer, or annual winter waves of Covid

Many thanks ⁦@AlexWitt⁩ for hosting me from the mountains beautiful Utah today where I’m speaking at a medical conference. I offered on my opinion on where we might head next in the coming months…
The hope is that omicron continues to decline in the US as fast as it accelerated. So far that seems to be what’s happening but we need to be careful: after omicron began its descent it got stuck halfway down and still remains
And you have the situation in Denmark 🇩🇰 where the BA.2 sub variant is creating problems, so omicron and it’s subvariants could be with us for a while..

Ugh, did Tucker Carlson go after me tonight on Fox News? Whenever Fox or their fellow travelers does that it’s often followed by a wave of aggression on the internet or worse, sometimes with antisemitic with Nazi images. Looks like they’re starting to roll in…
Interesting day:
This morning nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize
This evening under attack from political extremists because of a Fox News dog whistle
And right on cue...

Today is #WorldNTDDay #worldntdday2022 in 2005 we wrote the first papers using the term "neglected tropical diseases" indexed in PubMed, creating a list of 12 diseases + opportunity to bundle them in a "rapid-impact" package of essential medicines that now reach >1 billion/yr
The first papers were published in @PLOSMedicine (because @PLOSNTDs did not yet exist) and I remember how we worked with @GYamey to organize them. journals.plos.org/plosmedicine/a…
Ultimately we worked with the @PLOS team and Dr. David Brandling-Bennett at @GatesFoundation to launch @PLOSNTDs journals.plos.org/plosmedicine/a…

1/4 I have some concerns about today's White House announcement:

1. 400 million donated vaccine doses is nothing much to brag about, @biological_e and our @TexasChildren's Vaccine Center alone has already produced 250 million doses.

cnn.com/2022/01/26/pol…
2/4

2. Lack of situational awareness that we need 6-9 billion vaccine doses for the African Continent, Latin America & Caribbean Region, and Southeast Asia.
3/4

3. By failing to vaccinate the world's low-income countries we should except another variant of concern to emerge and ultimately spread across Texas and the Southern US by this summer.
