And hearing now via @RosebellK that women were sexually assaulted during African Cup of Nations victory celebrations in #Senegal is reminder of what I say in my essay: football is one of the many outlets that patriarchy offers to cis men as an excuse to treat us like shit
My essay above was for the finals of the Euro and Copa America cups. And now hearing about men sexually assaulting women after #Senegal’s victory in African Cup of Nations, it is clear to see the cover that tournaments and matches give to men to abuse women, win, lose, or draw.
On the pitch, off the pitch, from managers to players to the men who support them: patriarchy fuels a dangerous cocktail of toxic masculinity in football as well as many other men’s sports.
