If you want to argue that you'll never end the mandates until the pandemic is completely over, that's logical (that is the Fauci/Walensky position).

I would argue that as a societal matter, it's better to end mask mandates earlier, and then reinstitute mask recommendations earlier in the next wave. Not mandates, but recommendations.
People get tired of energy procedures. That is normal.
Allowing people to go back to normalcy for a while probably makes them now willing to mitigate later, if need be.
