If I were a westerner, I would ask, if China is still this backward and poor, a failed state, way behind the West, what are we afraid of?
Systematically depicting China as poor & backward is to prevent cultural infiltration. Who would be attracted to a culture and a political system which produce poverty, hardship and slave labor? Every time I say Xinjiang is prosperous, a westerner is shocked at my "gaslighting".
