Major attacking Boris Johnson is like a goldfish square up to a blue whale. The comparison is embarrassing. Disgraceful, disloyal and anti-democratic, Major and his ilk may succeed in crushing Boris. But only Boris will go down in history.

When Major became PM in 1990, he inherited 396 Tory MPs. 7 years later he was left with just 165, and it took three elections for the Tories to get back in, after his calamitous decision to enter the European Exchange Rate Mechanism and to sign the godawful Maastricht agreement.

Compare that with Boris. The Tories got 8.8% in the EU elections. A few months later, with Boris leader, they achieved 44% in the 2019 GE and an 80-seat majority. A turnaround Major could only dream of. Boris has the kind of political charisma that Major can only sit and admire.

With those figures, you’d imagine Major would stay quiet. So why does he pop up again today to deliver another Boris-bashing speech? It isn’t about parties, it is about Brexit.

Major is part of the Remainer elite — a cabal of politicians, businesses, academics, celebrities and the woke brigade — who are still, 6 years on, aghast that they were unsuccessful in reversing Brexit. They are hellbent on revenge. They want political blood. Boris’s blood.

Day after day, we see Remoaners like Major attempt to take advantage of a drip-drip of stories in an effort to destroy Boris and ensure that no other populist Brexiteer can be elected. A PM must be pro-EU, a PM should act and look like us, they think.

Boris is an aberration that must never be repeated. The Tory party must serve the interests of the privileged elites, not all those Brexit voters.

For such Tories — if we can call them that — Starmer, who tried to overturn the referendum, is preferable. They want Labour to win, with a Remainer in charge who’ll move us closer to the EU. Then we can re-join, the sooner the better. Kick out Boris and we can kick out Brexit.

Major is an unmemorable footnote. Boris — however long he lasts before the Remainer establishment gets him — will always be the PM who took Britain out of the EU, achieved a deal they all said was impossible and is guiding us to a recovery from a horrible pandemic.
