People responding to this with "ordinary Americans love giant land yachts" & it's driving me crazy. If you think Americans have some kind of innate, inborn love of grotesquely large, unsafe vehicles, congrats, you are a Sucker For Capitalism. The car companies thank you.
OK, I gotta do other stuff, but a final word on this. The US ripped out numerous functional public-transit systems; we built wide roads surrounded by single-family neighborhoods; we developed land-use regs that discourage dense walkability & practically mandate sprawl;
... we made buying SFHs easy & cheap; we held gas taxes low even as other democracies were raising them; we didn't price a wide range of externalities into vehicle & fuel prices; we crafted fuel-economy standards practically custom-designed to encourage size/weight bloat;
... we prioritize roads & parking above all in transportation policy & empower NIMBYs to block anything in the other direction; we allowed state depts. of transportation to be utterly captured & run by the roads/sprawl lobby;
... car companies, which make far more profit on land yachts (in part due to the previously listed decisions), relentlessly advertise bigger vehicles, make them cheaper & more available, & bias the car-dealership monopoly to favor them. I could go on.
The point is, these were all decisions made by corporations & the governments those corporations more or less own. They were not responses to some ineffable American character; they were deliberate efforts to *shape American behavior & preferences*.
Now here we are -- surrounded by infrastructure devoted to cars, awash in cheap gas, public transit systems starved of funding, laws shaped around cars, regulations designed to increase car use & car size, culture inundated by ads & propaganda pushing us toward big cars ...
... and people are all, "oh, I guess this is just how Americans are! We just love sprawl and big cars, because of the ineffable American Character™️, & auto companies & the governments they've captured are just helpfully responding to our desires!" It's maddening.
The point is not to condemn anyone's personal preferences (which of course *feel* authentic). It's just to say: this did not simply happen. It is this way for reasons & *we could decide to do things differently*. There will be challenges, but national character is not among them.
Final bit & then I really gotta quit. Americans suffer sky-high rates of obesity, heart disease, & diabetes. You could say, "well, what can you do, Americans just prefer highly processed, carb-laden food & sugary soda! It's how they are!" You can see how *that's* dumb, right?

It is honestly astonishing that they let this guy write political opinion columns. This is so bad. washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/…
There are so many columns like this, which equate the things the GOP is actually saying & doing with a caricature of the left. The irony is, there are plenty of reasons to be annoyed with *actual* Dems! But instead they just parrot this "woke mob" bullshit.
But the absolute key to columns by identity centrists is that, insofar as they ever come close to specifying what policy they actually want -- what policy is Sensible & Centrist -- it always ends up being *what Dems are actually doing*.

My feed is generally dominated by horrible things & doom, so I'm making a conscious effort to share more enthusiasms. There are good things too!

On that note, a thread about my latest enthusiasm, the podcast @StrictScrutiny_.
strictscrutinypodcast.com
I discovered it via @chrislhayes (who is married to one of the hosts, @kateashaw1). It's Shaw & fellow hosts, @ProfMMurray & @LeahLitman, discussing Supreme Court stuff. I was worried it would be too technical but it is so accessible & smart & funny. Just a f'ing delight.
Three recent episodes have been haunting me. On this one, @RuthMarcus chats about her new book on the rise of Brett Kavanaugh. Lemme just say: if you think BK's career is practically a parody of mediocre white privilege ... you don't know the half of it. strictscrutinypodcast.com/podcast/suprem…

MTG is now the second most coveted endorsement on the right, after Trump.

I will never, as long as I live, understand how any Republican can contemplate that fact & not be deeply, mortifyingly *embarrassed*. thedailybeast.com/republicans-ad…
Kids These Days probably don't appreciate it, but when McCain chose Palin as his running mate, it was viewed as a clownish stunt that cost him the election. The idea that vapid, nasty dipshits from the RW swamp could be taken seriously at the highest levels was unthinkable.
Jokes on us! Palin became the model. McCain & the party he represented are dead & gone; the GOP now is nothing *but* a bunch of proto-Palins. Being vapid & nasty are not just desiderata, but requirements. You can't succeed *without* being vapid & nasty -- ask JD Vance.

What's even more wild than some people continuing to wear masks during a pandemic is other people refusing to accept a free vaccine & thereby prolonging the pandemic.
It's very clear that, while the deliberately unvaxxed are worse on any conceivable metric (moral, social, epidemiological), it is people who insist on continuing to be cautious that truly BOTHER elite pundits, to the point of obsession.
It's worth thinking about why that is. I have my theories. But regardless of the reasons, I wish pundits would work a little harder to distinguish between "things that bother me" & "things that are of real social & political significance." Soooo much punditry consists of ...

Infuriating. You know how USPS is trying to buy a bunch of shitty fossil-fueled trucks, over WH's objections? They've specced those trucks to be 1 LB over the "light truck" limit -- thus escaping tight fuel economy standards. Great stuff from @A_W_Gordon.
vice.com/en/article/4aw…
So much of what Dems wanted to do has been thwarted by shitheads. I want Biden to fight this one out. Win one, FFS.
More on this infuriating USPS situation. To change it would require action by Congress but of course Congress is utterly fucking ineffectual. BBB would help, but it's jammed up. I will seriously go nuts if we are forced to watch this slow-motion disaster.

OK, the GOP has *formally stated* that it believes political violence in service of conservative political power is legitimate.

Can we stop "debating" this shit now?
I'm on hold with the WA Dept. of Revenue -- have been for an hour! -- so I might as well tweet a thread while I wait. Let's talk about two different ways of conceiving legitimacy. What is its source? From whence does legitimacy derive?
One way to see it: moral & social legitimacy derive from a set of principles that apply to to all tribes & factions alike. A tribe's actions are legitimate insofar as they accord with those principles. So, eg, "it's bad to torture," no matter who's doing the torturing.
