There are so many columns like this, which equate the things the GOP is actually saying & doing with a caricature of the left. The irony is, there are plenty of reasons to be annoyed with *actual* Dems! But instead they just parrot this "woke mob" bullshit.
But the absolute key to columns by identity centrists is that, insofar as they ever come close to specifying what policy they actually want -- what policy is Sensible & Centrist -- it always ends up being *what Dems are actually doing*.
I remember David Brooks wrote that same column about a dozen times in the Obama years. He'd wring his hands endlessly about "extremists on both sides" & then say that what Obama should actually do is ... literally the shit Obama was trying to do.
What Bai wants, what Brooks wants, what they all want is to share the substantive commitments of Democrats but not be saddled with all the negative cultural associations & caricatures that the right has spent decades reinforcing.
It's not an option. In politics, if you want to fight for what you believe in, you get in the muck & fight. It's often frustrating & unfair & ignoble. People who profess to support the policy goals but disdain the fighting are not superior or more refined, as they seem to think.
They're just people who care more about their ego & self-image than they do about outcomes.
There are two parties. One's gone fascist. If you don't want fascism, support the other one. The end.
