A day out with the nonagenarian Muthukannammal, the last of the traditional dancers of the Viralimalai Murugan temple. The original Kurathi of the famous Viralimalai Kuravanji!

Her name was announced for the Padma Shri award by the President of India, few weeks ago.

🤩🙏🤩
I was visiting her and this place after close to two decades! And what a phenomenal memory she has!! She could recollect so much from the last time!

So much laughter, music, dance, history, raunchy jokes and her old world social graces!

Superbly exciting day! Lots to tell!
🤩🙏
I showed her the image of hers I had taken some nineteen years ago! A young Muthukannammal had performed Abhinayam to a Dikshitar's Nottuswaram for us, then. She could recollect everything from memory!

Even now she has a sharp memory and perfect eyesight!

What a woman! 🤩🙏
Last time I was here, I was hardly equipped with any fancy gadgets! I didn't own a camera! Had to borrow one from a friend who reluctantly gave it! But that's been the story with most of my research and travels to remote places! Sigh!

Glad I had saved this and other images.
She spoke so many fascinating things about her history. She was delighted that she got this recognition from the government in her ripe old age. She said this Gauravam wasn't for her personally but for her Parampara that she held on to all her life.

An unknown sculptor fan of hers gifted her a beautiful bronze sculpture of her bust. She was flattered and accepted it but told him he was half a century too late in seeing her! 😂

She has an old world sense of raunchy humour!

The piece is fantastic!

🙏🤩🙏🤩🙏
Lots of people are curious about Muthukannammal and her Parampara. Few years ago the Films Division released a documentary on her. You can watch it here. It will give you a brief idea about her and her art form.

🙏🙏🙏

There seem to be too many false dates about her age on the internet. She was born in 1929. So now, you calculate!

She had her traditional "Bottu ceremony" when she was seven. Since then, she has been dancing all her life. In the service of Lord Shanmukhanatha of Viralimalai! 🙏
In 1947, when the Devadasi system got abolished, she stopped performances in the temple. She continued to receive patronage from the royal family of Pudukkottai and other Zamindars. She continued performing at private functions and salon parties and other auspicious occasions.
The Viralimalai Devadasi repertoire is very different from that of Thanjavur one. While a few of the Thanjavur Quartet compositions are performed, there are other things like Arunagirinathar's Thiruppugazh, the famous Kuravanji, Kolattam, and Notuswarams, etc here. 😀

Something extraordinary is happening in Hyderabad. A giant statue of Saint Shri Ramanujacharya who propounded the Visishtadvaita philosophy has been set up. Today the Prime Minister of India, Shri @narendramodi ji will do Lokaarpanam.

A short thread on what it might signify. 🙏
The statue and complex around it looks damn impressive! It has miniature shrines to all the Divyadesams. Veda Patashalas, Yagashalas, Gaushalas and so forth.

Certainly a huge huge commendable feat achieved!

🙏😀🙏😀
I am not going into the biographical details of the Saint. They are well known and readily available. What is more important is Telugus reclaiming him. Yes, he was of Telugu ancestry in his Poorvashramam. His Inti peru was Aasuri. His father was Keshava Somayajulu. 🙏😀

In other Carnatic news, today is the Jayanthi Utsavam of poet, saint and composer Kancharla Gopanna, more popular as Bhaktha Ramadasu.

As a Vaggeyakara, he dedicated a large number of compositions to Lord Rama in Bhadrachalam, or "Dakshina Ayodhya", as it is called.

🤩🙏🤩🙏🤩
I am not going to get into his biography and such details. A lot of it is very well known. Even his musical compositions. They were first popularized by Balantrapu Garu and Dr BMK on the famous Bhakthi Ranjani show of All India Radio. They became a rage!

@AkashvaniAIR.
Before his compositions became popular with the classical music community, they were already a large part of local folk repertoire!

Farmers working in fields would sing his songs. In fact, they popularized them centuries before anyone else!

The entire classical dance community is in a state of shock with the recent Padma awards! And the @MinOfCultureGoI, @kishanreddybjp @KishanReddyOfc, @M_Lekhi have much to answer, some uncomfortable questions from a community that was neglected the last seven years.

A thread.
The recent awardees in dance were sisters Nalini and Kamlini for Kathak. Padmaja reddy for Kuchipudi.

While those Kathak sisters are old members of the Sangh and hence not too difficult to get with in-house recommendations, the Kuchipudi candidate surprised many.
Padmaja Reddy, a rich and influential socialite, but a highly mediocre dancer, from Hyderabad is the daughter in law of a Telangana minister. She has at times used names of popular Gurus and said she was their student. She was briefly a student of Shobha Naidu.

End of an big big era!

My beloved Guru Garu, Pouranika Sarvabhouma, Pravachana Chakravarthy, Veda Brahmasri Malladi Chandrashekhara Sastry Garu makes his final exit on this auspicious day! At 5.15 PM. There will never be another like him!

न भूतो न भविष्यति!

Atma Shanti 🙏
In his long and illustrious lifetime of 97 years, Sastry Garu has done over a lakh Saptahams of Srimad Bhagawatam, Srimad Valmiki Ramayanam and Mahabharatam. In addition to others like Srinivasa Kalyanam etc. He was an authority on the Vedas, Puranas and Upanishads!

Like Bheeshma Pitamaha, he observed Vaikuntha Ekadasi yesterday, and exited today. He lived a full life! So inspiring!

The heavens must be ringing with his voice!
