Here's what's going on in Canada, how it's introducing an entire nation to #bitcoin, and how banks were compromised in a democratic country. πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦πŸ¦

#bankrunCanada
Canadian truckers (#freedomconvoy2022) have occupied Ottawa roads for 3 weeks to protest unending Covid restrictions. 🚚

Truckers have also blocked key border crossings with the US, like the Ambassador Bridge which carries 25% of all trade between the two countries.
In other words, there's widespread civil disobedience.
Police across Canada haven't/can't remove these protestors. πŸš“

Towing companies refuse to remove the trucks in an act of support.

The police worry about escalation. A lot of officers also support the truckers too.

The convoy has been mostly peaceful and friendly.
@JustinTrudeau won't meet or negotiate with the convoy. The convoy won't leave until the restrictions go away.

They need fuel and food to stay around, and thus money.

So they raised $10 million on GoFundMe, but that got shut down.

Next, convoy participants turned to @GiveSendGo to fundraise. But that was recently hacked and donor data leaked.

It included names, emails, IP addresses, and zip/postal codes.

Not good if you don't want to be targeted.

That left #bitcoin.

@honkhonkhodl has crowdfunded 22 bitcoin (~$966k USD) on @tallycoin so far.

All of this poses a big problem for the govt, which has lost control of the situation.

So yesterday, on Feb. 14, the govt invoked the Emergencies Act (which has never been invoked before) and broadened the Crime and Terrorist Financing Act to include cryptocurrency and crowdfunding platforms.

Now,
- The government can legally force towers to tow trucks away,
- Banks can/should freeze the accounts of convoy truckers and report them to the police + intelligence service,
- Platforms should report donations to Canada's financial investigators.
Many legal experts think that the threshold for invoking the act has *not* been reached. For eg., the Canadian Civil Liberties Association:

To sum it up, the govt can now declare what is legal and illegal to donate to.🚫

Banks will help the government do this.

And Canadians of every stripe have now learned that their money is no longer theirs to donate or use.
But they're also learning that #Bitcoin cannot be frozen by a govt - it gives an individual complete freedom over their money.
