Roger Froikin @rlefraim wrote, "THE GREATEST THREATS TO DEMOCRACY
Democracy is not about voting, though that is an element in how one operates.
1)
Real Democracy depends first of all on (1) tolerance of dissent, (2) Uninhibited discussion, (3) and equal application of law regardless of status or identity and (4) a feeling, a perception, among the people that things are fair.
2)
To the degree that these four elements are dominant and strong, one can find an effective democracy.
But any reduction in any of these 4, can be, and probably is, a real threat to democracy.
3)
Now, using that measure, look at your politicians and what they actually do - beyond the cliches and professionally written scripts than any actor could probably read better.
4)
Ask yourselves what politicians and social activists want to shut down those that dissent, those that do not want to censor every single thing they say to conform to some current PC standard.
When you see a double standard, that is a threat to democracy.
5)
When you hear a politician demonize someone with lies and defamatory slander, that is a threat to democracy.
Autocrats, dictators, always concentrate on controlling thought - usually by controlling information. Fear is a popular tool for autocrats.
6)
And the BIG LIE, which often starts with claims about what someone is thinking or planning, as if they are mind-readers, is often the tactic. Autocrats always claim to know what their "enemies are thinking "He wants.....", "He believes.....".
7)
And those that are really threats to democracy always claim those they oppose are not just disagreeing, but that they are evil by nature and need to be stopped or even destroyed.
8)
Think about it, look at those leading countries today, and then tell me who is a threat to democracy."

1)
A weak deal that will do nothing to stop Iranian nuclear ambitions, nothing to protect the rest of the region from Iranian ambitions. It will strengthen Islamic radicalism, strengthen Hezbollah, and force the rest of the region to arm and prepare with a degree of cooperation.
2)
Who benefits? The Germans and French who were desperate to do business with Iran will benefit. China will benefit.

This past week in Canada has been a big disappointment for many who believed Canada was a nation that was more moral, less often extreme, and polite
1)
Peaceful Protesters, generally protected by tradition and law in Canada, were labelled as terrorists, had rights suspended by an Emergency Act that was intended to deal with terrorism,
2)
Dealing with dissent by threatening people with prison, loss of property, fines, and seizure of their assets. A warning not to disagree with the powers that be?

I find it interesting that when Jews try to explain anti-semitism, such as recent articles by a rather prominent Rabbi in the UK, explanations range from “well we’re different” to
1)
“anti-semites hate us because of the moral values of Torah”. Neither is really all that correct. After all, they cannot despise us for our moral values that we bring to the world when they claim to own them themselves as part of their claim to be our spiritual successors.
2)
There are really two reasons for anti-Semitism.
The first is in the ideology/theology of Christianity, in its dual claim to own universal truth and to be the successor to Judaism in the Covenant.

1)
What has alarmingly changed now is that YOU are being asked to participate in that anti-Semitic endeavor by your neighbors, schools, media and elected officials."
