Everybody wants to be self-employed

But, how can we do it successfully?

17 lessons to help you succeed:
1. You are never too old

During covid, many people became self-employed by choice and need.

People are lighting up by finding their purpose, and they’re in their 40s, 50s, 60s.

We realize we have 20 or 30 more years to live a purpose-filled life as a second chapter.
2. The self-employed ecosystem

To be successful in our self-employment ecosystem, we focus on:

1 – Personal development
2 – Business strategy
3 – Daily habits

The only thing we can control is the environment we set up for the results we want.
3. Personal development

When you are self-employed, you are the business.

Key to increasing your business success is increasing your capacity to create success, receive success, and manage it.
4. Development > Strategies

People want strategies and simple action steps.

Before optimizing strategy, you need a foundation.

The strategies and action steps won’t work until we build the foundation.

Lottery winners lose their money because they were not prepared to manage.
5. Fear of success

Many people fear success.

They fear who they will become if successful.

How can you be as successful as you’re meant to be if you’re afraid to succeed?

If you are successful, it will not change you. It may highlight who you are, but it will not change you.
6. Be clear on what you don’t want

When you are clear with what you don’t want in your life, it sets you in a positive direction.

When we don’t want something in our lives, we are motivated to stop it. We are encouraged to move forward and get away from it.
7. Focused intentions

Don’t be vague with your intentions.

Be clear in how you want to move from x to y.

For example, I want to move from being out of shape to exercising regularly.

The more precise and powerful we are, the greater likelihood we will take successful action.
8. Get to 100%

Too many people get to 80% on ten things.

Few people get to 100% on the three things that matter.

When we stop at 80% on our projects, we have reset the goals.

We are putting our own self-limiting beliefs on what we can achieve.

Finish what you start.
9. Negative Mindset

Ask yourself, what negative mindset is holding me back?

We are more likely to succeed when we can let go of this mindset.

The goal is simply bring it to light and be aware of it, manage it, and be more productive because it is no longer in our way.
10. Fundamental mindset shift

Ask yourself, what fundamental mindset shift do I need to make?

In what way are you seeing the world that is no longer serving you?

The mindset may have served us in life at some point; however, if it is no longer helping us, we need to let it go.
11. Directional but not definite

Have a vision for where you want to go.
Recognize it may not be a straight line.

If you make consistent progress toward your vision with daily actions and habits, you will get there and won’t need a prescriptive roadmap.
12. Personal brand

As a self-employed person, you are the brand.

Your brand needs to be authentic and welcoming.

Gone are the days when you could be “the best” and be a jerk.

People want to buy into you before they buy from you. Be warm, welcoming, and authentic.
13. Listen for strengths

Many of us have imposter syndrome.

If we hear we are a good writer, we ignore it.

Another friend reaches out and says, you’re a good writer. We still ignore it.

When you hear this same thing from 20+ people, there is something you should listen to.
14. Focus on current clients

We spend so much time marketing to new clients and ignore our current clients.

It is much simpler to keep clients than acquire clients.

We offer new clients 15% off to join; however, we don’t tell existing clients they can have 10% off, why?
15. A business model of multiples

We want multiple streams of income.

We can look at each income stream as a lever to be increased or decreased as we want and need.

We are an authority business with multiple methods of monetization and can optimize collectively.
16. A step-up and step-down model

If you have multiple income streams, you can also have multiple levels.

For example, your ultimate course may be 1 on 1 intensive coaching; however, you may also offer group coaching or a community for your customers.
A customer in your community may “step up” to the 1 on 1 intensive coaching and “step down” to the community when complete.

Keeping our customers in our system allows us to continue working with them in various capacities throughout life and to have lifelong ambassadors.
17. Multipurpose

There are two ways we can multipurpose.

First, we can repurpose content, such as writing a thread on Twitter based on a Podcast conversation.

Second, we can repurpose knowledge from a Podcast conversation and use it in our coaching conversations.
