The @WCSedu board is now discussing the elementary curriculum review committee findings. Buckle up and refill those beverages.
Cleveland (D7) says parents are the mentors & teachers and kids look to them while teaching them to respect those who have different beliefs than they do. WCS teachers are experienced professionals. Disappointed in our community who have lost faith that our teachers....
...can't teach these matters. "I have listened." Someone will find something wrong with any state-mandated curriculum. There will always be something someone doesn't like, and we have a process that was followed.
....committee did thorough job involving and can't quantify number of hours spent on this. These opinions are very subjective and appreciate the time of those who wrote appeals and offered suggestions....
...hopes Golden will consider suggestions and continue to look for ways to improve curriculum. Is it feasible to get ride of Wit & Wisdom and start over? Golden says if it's unlimited will have to go through state approval process again, but can make small changes.
...Golden says generally there are 6 years between review cycles.
D3 Eliot Mitchell agrees that no curriculum is perfect and that we'll look for ways to make improvements to address concerns. Thinks policy/process could be adjusted to look more broadly at curriculum, and also how opt-outs are handled be reevaluated.
D2 Dan Cash says this whole process was rushed. But multiple public speakers who are unhappy with the review results said it took SEVEN MONTHS AND TOOK FOREVER.
Cash says #1 issue has always been age appropriateness. mmmhm.
Cash: "pay is a big issue, but honestly believe after listening to @WceaTeachers president the other night really said nothing. She didn't have to say anything. There are more issues that we have to get to the bottom of and one is this curriculum."
Cash: "a lot of teachers and principals don't feel comfortable with the text and what not. We need to know."
Cash: "I don't get on the internet. Don't get on social media, never have. But I heard through the grapevine that these appeals are the reasons our teachers want to leave this county and that is sad."
Cash is talking for a very a long time and we can't summarize this. Now hiring: video editors who want to do a "best of Dan Cash" reel for us. (seriously.)
Now brings up "social emotional learning" and says he has a list. He looks for it and can't find it.
oh no. he's saying lgbtq and race and bullying and the 17 cases "on the books" and asks what happened with all that. Heard "the teachers weren't reporting it." Not sure where we're going with this but it's....not good.
Cash: "I am very interested in a survey which brings up all these issues. We need to find out what's going on with teachers."
now onto Galbreath (D6) - thanks everyone who spoke tonight and everyone who's had an exchange of ideas. Says everything was done correctly and took awhile to point people in the right direction (process wise.)
Galbreath says this curriculum is pushing an agenda.
if the teachers do it as written, they may well be pushing that agenda. 🧐
Galbreath doesn't see a way to piecemeal a change to this recommendation, don't have replacements to texts or curriculum to attach to it. Going to vote for committee's recommendation and hopes the review continues.
Ugh - laptop about to die. Sorry to leave you hanging but finish watching here. Sounds like committee reco will pass but will update later:
2 members bit against the curriculum review committee and staff recommendation. The recommendation passes.

The @WCSedu is now discussing a resolution in opposition to HB2833 re: #charter schools, which would shorten the timeline for approval and allows charters to use district facilities:
The #wcsb is asking with this resolution for local control. Sheila Cleveland who chairs the legislative committee on the Board, says this is on the TSBA "oppose" list which means the state board does *not* recommend this for Tennessee public school districts.
...notes it would allow charter schools to bypass local approval and go straight to the state for approval (and we know how @GovBillLee feels about sending public school taxpayer money to private charter schools.)
More info on the Hillsdale K-12 charter application sitting with @WCSedu for review - a 🧵. You can find the official application linked here (all 317 pages of it) but let's talk about where @Moms4LibertyWC comes into play....
When @Moms4LibertyWC advertised the new Hillsdale charter school in their Facebook group, it showed the 1776 curriculum. "1776" is literally not found once in the 317 pages of the detailed charter curriculum application.
Some @Moms4LibertyWC got VERY excited about this 1776 curriculum which they said was created to defend against CRT and, specifically, the 1619 Project.
We just received an official copy of the Hillsdale charter - dubbed "USA Classical Academy" - application to @WCSedu and there is a LOT to unwrap here. Short version: public school funding is being requested to fund what appears to be a Christian private school.
What does "training in the virtues" mean exactly? Whose virtues?
They're basing 2019 enrollment figures to pandemic-2021 enrollment? That makes sense. Also, nice pocketing of where "disadvantaged families" may live according to....pastors. Seems like solid research.
