Before we get started. YES, this study has AGE DATA AND BREAKDOWN OF COMORBIDITIES. Note this study was funded by Moderna BUT Kaiser Permanente has amazingly solid and pretty clean data when it comes to the vaccination status of its members so keep that in mind.

The term infection refers to the virus entering and being detectable in your system regardless of whether OR NOT it makes you sick, whereas the term illness refers to the virus entering, being detectable in your system AND making you sick. It it important not to conflate the two.

The VE of 2 and 3 doses against hospitalization with Delta were both ≥99%, while they were 84.5% (23.0–96.9%) and 99.2% (76.3–100.0%) against hospitalization with Omicron (Table 2). Notably, all four individuals hospitalized with Omicron despite receipt of three mRNA-1273 doses

were more than 60 years of age with chronic diseases, and one was also immunocompromised. Yes, effectiveness against infection DID wane over time. I implore you to read my other threads in regards to infection and how immunological memory works.

For immunocompromised individuals, this is why 4th doses are recommended for a boost in protection against infection. The data in this study correlates with others regarding protection versus infection, including the Danish household transmission study.

An additional study I am going to add onto this thread which demonstrates why receiving 3 doses of an mRNA vaccine encoding Wuhan-Hu-1, have a diverse memory B- cell repertoires that can respond rapidly and produce antibodies capable of clearing even diversified variants such

as Omicron. These data help explain why a 3rd dose of an mRNA vaccine that was not specifically designed to protect against variants is effective against variant-induced serious disease. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

The number of boosted hospitalizations in this study were so low researchers were not able to measure any possible waning. Per the study, “the 3-dose VE against hospitalization with Delta or Omicron was >99% across the entire study population.” Yes, you read that correctly.

“Our findings demonstrate high, durable 3-dose VE against Delta infection but lower effectiveness against Omicron infection, particularly among immunocompromised people. However, 3-dose VE of mRNA-1273 was high against hospitalization with Delta and Omicron variants.”

TLDR. The COVID-19 vaccines are extremely effective at preventing serious illness, hospitalization AND death even in the face of Omicron. Make sure you are protected. Don’t walk around immune naive.
