Here are some sanctions that might actually make Putin pay attention unlike the laughable package so far announced. Thread. #Ukraine
Set up a multinational UK/US/allies unit to pursue Kremlin-connected money and freeze it worldwide. This is hard diplomatic graft but necessary in the absence of comprehensive UN sanctions. We will need to persuade countries one by one.
Ban all Russian airlines flying into the UK, one of the world’s busiest hubs. Easy win.
Prohibit all transactions inc financial with any Russian state-backed entity.
Audit all Russian held accounts and property in the UK seizing/freezing all assets that cannot be legally accounted for. Again this takes work not rhetoric.
Trace all connections between Russia companies and banks and Russian military-industrial companies. Freeze their assets when held overseas. Prohibit all transactions.
List all individuals connected with Kremlin (not three people!), impose immediate travel ban, trace and freeze assets.
Independent and public audit of all foreign donations to British political parties. And while we’re at it why not ban them.
These are just a few suggestions. There are plenty more things that can be done. Most require labour (by FCDO and Treasury primarily). Not artful portraits of the Foreign Secretary signing bits of paper.
