The whole of Southern Nigeria was spellbound. Both legs were originally to be played in Lagos but 2nd leg was moved to Kaduna on the others of Shehu Musa Yar'Adua
Rangers won the tie on penalties in Kaduna after both legs had ended goalless.

On our Salawu Street that evening, an Igbo young man who sold in one of those "Chemist" shops spent like an hour walking up and down the street with his 'Up Rangers' red and white paper face cap.

In some societies the people in charge of the crowd at the MKO Abiola stadium on Tuesday 29th March 2022 would lose their jobs.

The first live match I watched was a Principal's Cup game at the old UAC Stadium (now Teslim Balogun). I was at the Stadium in 1989 when Okwaraji died
The memories of the crowd at that my first live game and on the day Okwaraji died at National Stadium Lagos have stayed with me to this day. Nobody died at that UAC but many died at the Okwaraji match - an Italia '90 WC qualifier.

The memory of Tuesday night leaves me shuddering
Trying to get into the stadium you were given hell by shameless Police officers who were causing bottlenecks so you can bribe them to get through. Even with your ticket/Accreditation pass.

I got through via another entrance, told a DSS officer what the Police were doing. Him:

Algeria miss back to back World Cups but at least they have been African Champions in between.

Italy miss back to back World Cups but they are European Champions.

I will take being African Champions if it means missing a WC.
