Nato Sec General @jensstoltenberg and EU Commission Pres @vonderleyen holding a joint press conference in Brussels
Stoltenberg says that NATO's Article V collective security guarantee is "iron-clad."
Notable that Stoltenberg is holding a press conference with VDL and Charles Michel. There are EU states (like Finland and Sweden) in the EU but not NATO.
VDL: "The three of us standing together is yet more proof of how closely the EU and NATO are responding to the Kremlin."
Von der Leyen: "Putin ordered atrocious acts of oppression against a sovereign and independent country and innocent people. We will hold Russia accountable for this outrageous violation of Ukraine's sovereignty."
Boris Johnson: "Our worst fears have come true and all our warnings have proved tragically accurate. President Putin of Russia has unleashed war in our European continent, attacked a friendly on a neighbouring country, without any provocation and any credible excuse."
Johnson invokes Chamberlain: "This is not, in that famous phrase, a far away country of which we know little. We have Ukrainian friends in this country, neighbours, co-workers...we cannot and will not just look away."
Johnson: "Today in concert with our allies, we will agree a massive package of economic sanctions which will, in time, hobble the Russian economy."
Take a step back. Europe is holding its breath while we wait to see whether one of its great powers launches a full invasion of a smaller sovereign neighbour, itself a follow up to an earlier invasion and annexation. This an old, old tale which Europe thought it had left behind.
Yet it threatens to combine the worst of the old and new. 19th century politics with 21st century weaponry. Consequences for Ukraine in the near term and the rest of Europe in the longer term are disturbing in the extreme.
And now Europe wakes up to find that it happened- a full scale invasion of a state by a Great Power. The biggest military incursion in Europe since the Cold War, arguably since the Second World War. Consequences, in every direction, are profound.
President Biden: "Who in the Lord's name does Putin think gives him the right to declare new so-called territories that belong to his neighbours? This is a flagrant breach of international law."
Biden: "We're implementing sanctions on their sovereign debt. We've cut off Russia's government from Western financing. They can no longer raise money from the West and cannot trade its new debt on our markets."
Biden: "We still believe that Russia is poised to go much further in launching a massive military attack against Ukraine."
Nation Sec General @jensstoltenberg: “This is a crisis created by Russia alone. We commend Ukraine for its restraint…we stand in solidarity with Ukraine’s people and its government…we will continue to provide Ukraine with strong political support.”
Stoltenberg: “I welcome the economic sanctions announced today by many NATO allies and the decision by the German government not to certify the Nordstream 2 pipeline.”
Stoltenberg: “This is the most dangerous moment for European security in a generation.”
