With the outbreak of war in Ukraine, some men’s rights activists (MRAs) note that large numbers of men and boys are killed and injured in war. Yes, that’s right. They are sent to war largely by other men. And traditional masculinity has been central to justifications for war. 1/3
War and militarism: Wars are supported more by men than women. It is men, not women, who have excluded women from joining men in military and combat roles. Feminist women and women’s movements have played key roles in challenging war and militarism. 2/3
Because most combatants in armed conflicts in wars are men, males also the major direct victims of military operations. But the *overall impacts* of war and conflict and their aftermath are greater for women than men. xyonline.net/content/gender… 3/3
As it is, men’s rights activists spend their energies attacking feminist and other progressive movements, the very forces that seek to lessen the militarism that costs so many men and boys their lives. All they seem to want is for more women and girls to be killed alongside them
So, if we're genuinely concerned about the large numbers of men and boys being forced to stay and fight in Ukraine, we should support feminist and other progressive efforts to challenge militarism and right-wing, authoritarian governments like Putin's.
Here's a perfect example. Support the call to action of one of the most longstanding feminist anti-militarist organisations, the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Let us come together and say #NoMoreWars: bit.ly/352ngch @WILPF
I'm off to bed.

The rape culture myth that a person who is good to some people cannot be a sexual abuser to others. bustle.com/p/the-kavanaug… via @bustle. By Gabrielle Moss. 1/5
All of us are likely to know someone who’s committed assault. Why is believing this so hard? 1) Because it’s upsetting. E.g. considering that your friend, brother, uncle, or father has perpetrated sexual assault. 2/5
2) Because it makes us feel safe. The comforting belief that being smart and careful means that you will never be around perpetrators. (And the flipside of this is victim-blaming and shaming.) 3/5

An Epidemic of Disbelief
This feature article in The Atlantic highlights US police’s large-scale neglect of rape kits and their pervasive disbelief of rape victims (July 2019)
theatlantic.com/magazine/archi… 1/7
“in 49 out of every 50 rape cases, the alleged assailant goes free - often, we now know, to assault again. Which means that rape - more than murder, more than robbery or assault - is by far the easiest violent crime to get away with.” 2/7
Police efforts regarding rape victims: police rarely took notes, didn’t contact the victim, and rarely sent rape kits to lab for testing. But when this was discovered, and police units finally to begin processing these, they indicted large numbers of rapists in cold cases. 3/7

The myth of survivor solidarity: Why it’s so hard for victim-survivors of violence to all just get along. By Louise Godbold @Godbold
culturico.com/2022/01/10/the… 1/4
For victim-survivors of violence who seek to stand together against injustice and abuse, the traumatising impacts of that violence can push them apart. Solidarity among survivors is valuable, but we must also understand how trauma makes it hard. 2/4
Trauma generates typical psychological and physical responses, conditioned responses, incuding: Emotional dysregulation. E.g., being quick to anger or offence. Dichotomous thinking. Enemy images. Empty frame of aggression. 3/4

Young, Male and Anti-Feminist – The Gen Z Boys Who Hate Women.
Substantial proportions of young men have anti-feminist beliefs. and there’s a young male backlash. This piece describes this as increasing (but is there longitudinal data?). vice.com/en/article/dyv… @vice 1/4
Some young men participate in women-hating online forums and gaming communities, and there’s a seeming increase in boys’ and young men’s adherence to and promotion of anti-feminist claims, at least online. 2/4
In her book ‘Men Who Hate Women’, Laura Bates writes of boys of 11 and 12 entering anti-feminist communities, recruited by older men through gaming. Such involvements also can inspire other forms of prejudice, e.g. racism. 3/4

Men who perpetrate domestic and sexual violence are *made*, not born. Their use of violence is the unsurprising outcome of widespread social conditions. They use violence not because of some hardwired disposition but because of the gendered norms and inequalities around them. 1/4
The violence that some men use is the predictable result of the lessons about manhood they absorb as they grow up, the sexist peer cultures in which they participate, and the gender inequalities & other conditions that are woven into their everyday lives. 2/4
So if we want to stop making perpetrators, we have to change the social conditions which produce them. That is what primary prevention is: changing the cultural, and material, and structural conditions which drive violence. To prevent initial perpetration & victimisation. 3/4

Feminism: is a movement aimed at ending patriarchal power structures and social norms, not a mere celebration of ‘choice’. By Dr Meagan Tyler. 1/6
theconversation.com/no-feminism-is…
Women make choices, yes, but these are shaped by wider social conditions. Choices are hollow when structural conditions and cultural norms are highly limiting.
A choice-focused pseudo-feminism doesn’t demand real social change, and it undermines calls for collective action. 2/6
“Instead of resistance, we now have activities that were once held up as archetypes of women’s subordinate status being presented as liberating personal choices.” 3/6
