In the US, "the left" means Bernie/AOC. But so often, they're far from the left internationally -- as we see with Corbyn & Mélenchon's opposition to vaccine mandates, or you'll see if you ask Bolivia/Cuba/Venezuela/Ecuador/Lula what they think of Russia, and now with Ukraine:
Here's Varoufakis -- the leftist former Finance Minister of Greece and current member of Parliament -- elaborating on his view that the US should provide Russia its vow never to put Ukraine in NATO or militarily defend Ukraine in exchange for Russia withdrawing its troops:
And here's Varoufakis arguing that the "rules-based international order" wasn't destroyed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine (which he condemns) but by the US attack on Iraq and NATO/Clinton's bombing of Yugoslavia with no UN permission, among many other prior lawless Western acts:
And here's Varoufakis saying the invasion of Ukraine is solely on Putin, but it was NATO that provoked it with reckless expansion and threatening behavior, and that the only way out isn't righteous, angry tweets about Putin's evil - that does nothing - but diplomatic concessions.
In Brazil, Lula's party (PT) posted condemnation of US "aggression toward Russia" and imperialistic expansion of NATO, then deleted it. But Lula yesterday equated Russia's invasion with the US invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan and NATO bombing of Libya:

I post this not to agree with it all (though I agree with much) but to highlight how much wider the range of opinion is internationally.

Both US parties want to pretend they are wildly at odds but from Bernie/AOC to Rubio/Graham, the bipartisan consensus is virtually unanimous.
The Dem claim that the GOP is "on the side of Putin" is just as frivolous as the GOP attack that Dems are "weak on Russia." While there are certainly heterodox voices in media, there is very little divergence among elected officials in both parties regarding Russia/Ukraine.
The media -- and both parties -- love to find ways to pretend the two parties can't agree on anything. You can find differences of opinion if you look at media figures. But the major elected officials of both parties have the same view: condemning Putin and standing with Ukraine.
It's easy to scorn the idea that the US should engage with Russia or make concessions, to malign that as "appeasement." Reagan was accused of "appeasement" for negotiating. But this war is horrific and dangerous. Everything should be done to stop it.

Here's the compilation of how the warmongering and neocon factions on the Right even attacked Reagan as an "appeaser" of Russia and compared him to Neville Chamberlain because he was making concessions to the Kremlin to attain peace:

If you say now that constant NATO expansion eastward toward Russia was viewed as highly threatening not just by Putin but most Russians, people will say you're inventing Kremlin apologia. Read what current CIA Director William Burns warned in 2008: 👇

This, from 2015, is also worth hearing. As I said last night, what is now taboo to say - NATO expansion has been legitimately threatening to Russia and Ukraine is of vital interest to Russia but not the US - was long recognized by US officials/scholars:

Here, in two videos, is Noam Chomsky saying the same thing, which happened to be Obama's view as well. Threatened expansion of NATO to Ukraine is legitimately dangerous for Russia, for which Ukraine is of vital interest (but not to the US). Please watch:

Here's the answer given yesterday by Lula -- the current frontrunner in Brazil's 2022 presidential election -- when asked his view of the war in Ukraine:
Here's the view on Russia/Ukraine of former long-time President of Bolivia Evo Morales:

It's impossible to overstate how extreme this has been, worsening daily. Largely due to social media, the level of lockstep messaging and reckless affirming of disinformation is worse now than even after 9/11. Zero attempt to identify pleasing assertions as false, by design.👇
It's indifference over false stories spreading as long as they advance the right side: The Noble Lies. That's how a propagandistic government (and neocons) think, not how journalists or citizens should. Even if you're certain of your moral views, nobody should want to be mislead.

At noon EST today, I'll be live on Rumble discussing the war in Ukraine and the debate over what role the U.S. Government should play, if any, in its outcome.

Whenever war breaks out, emotions are extremely high, as are nationalism and tribalism. Especially at the start, there typically is lockstep unity among political/media elites. There's thus no point in using social media to do anything but read from that script. Chomsky on TV:
Here's the second part where Chomsky -- 30 years ago -- explained why the constricting structure of television (requiring "concision": the demand to make all points in 5 minutes between commercials) precludes conventional wisdom from being challenged. Social media is even worse:

Please remember that any criticisms of the President of the United States during this crisis is immoral, disloyal, plays into Putin's hands, and likely means that you're a Kremlin asset or useful idiot. Now is the time for caution and patriotism, not criticism or questioning. 🇺🇸
Important reminder from the past about our collective responsibilities now (though such reminders aren't really necessary given how often and emphatically employees of media corporations such as @kasie are saying the same thing or worse):
Just a stunning thing to read from someone whose corporate job title is "journalist" -- criticizing the president is illegitimate:

I thought in 2012 that Obama was right about Russia and Romney was wrong, and I still think so: the idea that Russia is the greatest threat to the US is absurd.

But everything about Dem politics and rhetoric requires Dems to do what @PaulBegala did:

There's a major irony when it comes to partisan politics and Russia: Obama was everything Trump was accused of being. Obama was eager to avoid confrontation with Putin. He resisted sending lethal arms to Ukraine (Trump did) and denied they were a grave threat (even after Crimea).
There's no way to overstate the utter insanity of the US media and the Democratic Party spending 5 years affirming a completely deranged conspiracy theory -- that Trump was controlled by and captive to the Kremlin through blackmail -- when everything negated that demented tale.

This is the moment when US journalists really get to shine. They put on their toughest war rhetoric. Tell Americans about the virtues of sacrifice. And summon the courage to all unite to denounce Putin and assure everyone all the blame lies with him and him alone. It's inspiring.
Under Obama, Russia annexed Crimea.

Under Biden, Russia recognized the sovereignty and independence of two territories of Ukraine.

Under Trump, he did none of this.

Should this cause any reevaluation of whether Trump was, in fact, a blackmail-controlled puppet of the Kremlin?
Please be advised that any questioning of US policy or. the prevailing US narrative during this sensitive time constitutes the crime of treason, according to Harvard Law Professor @tribelaw. Treason is punishable by death, so it's probably best to tread *very* carefully.

NEW: The Neoliberal War on Dissent in the West

greenwald.substack.com/p/the-neoliber…
Those who most flamboyantly proclaim that they are fighting fascists continue to embrace and wield the defining weapons of despotism.

The tactics Trudeau is employing are a decade in the making, and are part of a much broader plan to criminalize and then crush dissent.
Episodes like this demonstrate just how propaganda functions. We're so well-trained to instantly recognize these tyrannical attacks on dissent as autocratic and tyrannical when used by enemies of the West, but barred from seeing them the same way when used by our own governments.
