🧵: whilst there’s a lot of talk of Russian oligarch money in London, Barcelona has plenty of its own to think about.
Let's start: Abramovich’s superyacht is currently moored up at the OneOcean Port Vell - A pic I took of it a few hours ago: #StandWithUkriane#Abramovichout
Three other Russian billionaires are reported to have their superyachts in Barcelona. However, yachts are the tip of the iceberg.
50% of the Marina is owned by Vagit Alekperov, the president of the leading Russian oil company LUKOIL -
the second largest in Russia after Gazprom. Alekperov reportedly met with Putin last Thursday and other business leaders (via @stephenburgen).
The other oligarchs with yachts in Barcelona are reported to be:
Sergei Chemezov: CEO of Rostec Corporation, a Russian state-owned investment company focused on defence and high. He’s also chairman of the Union of Russian Mechanical Engineers and a lieutenant-general.
Reportedly close to Putin. Served together in the 80s for KGB in E Germany.
Andrey Molchanov: On US "oligarch list" as close to Putin. Owns a controlling stake in LSR Group, the biggest producer of construction materials in Russia & former member of the country's legislature.
Few people seem to know what goes on in the marina, let alone who owns it. I hope this helps shed some light.
Neither the Spanish nor Catalan local government has said anything about the issue.
Care to comment about oligarchs going about their business with total impunity in Barcelona @gencat @sanchezcasrejo @portofbarcelona@MAECgob ?
I'm clearly no expert but I can't see Russia doing well out of this. As the West found out in the Middle East, you can't simply go into a country and expect things to settle down quickly. Less so in Ukraine which has the biggest army in the region after Russia,
every man has done 12 months military service and beyond the regular army, Ukraine has 900,000 volunteer reservists.
Furthermore, the US has supplied billions worth of weapons since 2014. European countries have also provided military equipment and apparently training too...
If Russia does capture the entire country, is it really likely it can hold onto it and not face intense resistance?
