If Russia's military commanders were smart, they would turn that giant military column around (if it still has fuel) and drive it back to Donbas. That sounds like a joke. It isn't.
🧵
I don't know what the assault on Kyiv will look like because there are a million variables. It could be a weeks-long grind or the city could fall in a day with minimal fighting.
After they take it, I don't know what the beginning of the insurgency will look like. It could be ferocious and immediate or it could take time to build as it did in Iraq.
But I do know this: Once Russian units are in Kyiv, whether it takes a day or a month, the occupation will become a living nightmare from which Russia cannot wake.
We saw the carnage wrought by Iraqi insurgents on American units and Iraqi government forces. At no point did the insurgency represent more than 1% of the population. Now imagine if American and Iraqi units in Baghdad or Ramadi or Fallujah had faced 10 or 20 times that number.
Those Iraqi insurgents were armed with Iraqi military equipment and, at times, Iranian imports. That's it. Now imagine a force 10-20X the size, armed not with Iranian weapons, but with NATO drones and Javelins and all sorts of stuff Russia doesn't even want to think about.
At the same time, they will be able to trust no one. In Iraq, most Iraqis either *wanted* Americans there or tried to ignore them. Relationships with locals were generally good. Nevertheless, it was still often a violent mess. The Russians won't even have that luxury.
Everyone hates them. That's the default from day one. Even if a local won't shoot you or plant a roadside bomb, they won't help you. They won't tip you off to a looming ambush down the road as so many Iraqis did for us.
The Russians will be largely blind. As the attacks and casualties mount, the fear becomes paralyzing. Terrorized, traumatized Russian units will eventually refuse to leave the wire.
I'll stop there. The general idea is that these Russian troops in this column are about to go through some things. Whether it's in a day, a week or a month.
Most importantly, they'll never be able to create the conditions for effective governance.

This is man says his name is Russell "Texas" Bentley. He has a website and says he's been living in Donbas, Ukraine since 2014. My one question: How many photos can we find of Russell with prominent Republicans?
Never mind, he seems to hate Republicans and Democrats equally and fashions himself a supporter of conspiracy theorist Jesse Ventura and says Ventura "would have certainly been worth voting for" in 2016
There is a 100% chance Russell told these Russians he's a retired American general
Good piece from @KelliSmithNews evaluating Dallas police chief Eddie Garcia's first year in the role. But I also want to elaborate on one of the things he says 🧵 dallasnews.com/news/2022/02/0…
One of Chief Garcia's quotes is a response to a question I asked about whether he intended to honor Police Oversight Board recommendations regarding the discipline of DPD officers. And if not, why not? The Board chairman read the question aloud. Here's how Chief Garcia responded:
Here's the full transcript. On one hand, he has a point: The city council hired him to do a job. He should be allowed to do it. But my problem comes down to this: "If I don’t agree in the recommendation, I’m not gonna do it."
It's absurd for the U.S. government to call a mission "successful" when it resulted in the deaths of at least six children, four women and the loss of a helicopter. The target is dead, but use another word. 🧵
In this case, the U.S. clearly intended to take the individual alive. They failed, many civilians were killed and they lost a multi-million dollar helicopter. For the same effect and a lot less trouble, they could've bombed the house. "Successful" isn't the word. We need honesty.
More importantly, the U.S. needs to stop using "terrorism" as an excuse for multiple civilian deaths like it's 2001. This is two high-profile strikes in a row that killed a bunch of people they weren't supposed to. Terrorism can't an excuse for every bloodbath forever.
Remember this state trooper who went viral in October? He refused to get vaccinated, was fired, told Governor Inslee publicly to "kiss my ass" and then went on a Fox News tour.
He said he and his family "don't do vaccines." People will dance on this guy's grave, but it's largely Rupert Murdoch's fault. He should be in jail for brainwashing tens of millions of people. Hold him accountable for the damage he's done to society. bnonews.com/index.php/2022…
This would become an international incident if U.S. troops did this to a person in a foreign country
Like, are these cops just . . . free to go home tonight? This is one of the most abhorrent extra-judicial executions by law enforcement I've ever seen. These people should be held accountable immediately.
