Yesterday my Twitter feed was overwhelmed by trolls mocking my enthusiasm for what it means to Jews to see a Jew as the president of Ukraine, exerting such inspired & unifying leadership during this existential crisis for their country ...
Trolls focused on sorts of terrible things, including the history of antisemitism in Ukraine, but that is exactly the point: 100+ years ago Ukraine had 2.7 million Jews, a vibrant & engaged community that would be cut down by decades of pogroms, Holocaust, Soviet occupation ...
Judaism teaches us to remember, not to hate, but to stay grounded in the harsh reality can be for all of us and to celebrate when we find new hope & renewed joy. Fact that a Jew can be unifying president for this country, of all countries, breeds hope for renewed acceptance ...
More generally the invasion of Ukraine brings so many of us profound sadness for the suffering & saftey of Ukrainians; their resolve is an inspiration to us all. Ukrainian unity, supported swiftly & strongly by the rest of the world, is potentially/hopefully transformative ...
And for a people who saw a thriving population in Ukraine cut down, within the lifetime of many who are still alive to remember, it is inspiring to see Jews back in the mix, as part of the unified population, not as outsiders, but as accepted & respected members of their society.

Tuned in late, assume I missed the Ukraine & COVID parts of the speech, but these meat & potato: buy American, raise wages, cut costs things seem like they would be popular.
Biden's proposal to raise taxes on rich & powerful households & corporation stands in sharp contrast to Republican plan to raise taxes on lower-income working families & retirees. Taxing rich people is popular & good, taxing poor people is unpopular & bad.
Chief prosecutor for pandemic fraud is great idea: it was likely rampant AND we need more investigation & prosecution of white collar crime.
Thousands of years from now there is going to be a Jewish holiday centered on the exploits of Zelensky, and while the details will be fuzzy and/or wrong, the moral will be little Jewish girls & boys can grow up to be the bad ass leader of multicultural democracies.
Antisemites really digging into this tweet, casually hoping for the annihilation of all the Jews, which is exactly why on our holidays we both remember & celebrate our greatest triumphs, but also remember & build strength from our lowest moments.
There is this weird/sad/scary thing on Twitter where people will swarm my account with things like "I hope all of the Jews die" and then freak out when anyone calls them antisemitic.
2016: Russia cyber-attacks US to help elect Trump; Republicans gut anti-Russian policy from platform; ("free" campaign manager) Manfort floats policies to break-up Ukraine
2017: Republicans obstruct investigation into ongoing Russian cyber-attack on US ...
2018: Trump prostrates himself to Putin in Helsinki, declaring his trust of Russia over US
2019: Trump withholds military aid to Ukraine/Zelensky, trying to blackmail them into creating anti-Biden propaganda, Republicans back Trump's blackmail/smear attempt (ie, 1st Impeachment)
2020: Republicans acquit Trump of abuse-of-power over blackmail/smear of Ukraine; Trump pulls out of Open Skies treaty, which (as Vox notes here in 2019) really hurt Ukraine, making them vulnerable to disinformation and blind to Russian troop movement vox.com/2019/10/9/2090…
This thread attacking me is super interesting, well researched, but a few points (1) Attack hinges on my "lying" by saying @SenatorCollins was "concerned" about Trump blackmailing Ukraine/Zelensky before voting that blackmailing Ukraine/Zelensky for political favors was cool ...
@SenatorCollins So, here is the quote, where she says it politico.com/news/2020/02/0…. Super cool that person attacking me went through Collins' congressional testimony, but that is not limit of her public comments ...
(2) More important, as I clearly laid out in my original thread: @SenatorCollins has no credibility, at all, and her words are meaningless. What matters is her actions, she constantly has "concerns" about things, then votes to make them happen to US (hi Justice Kavanaugh!) ...
@truescotsman7 Sorry, should have said right-wing and/or Russian trolls ... You guys are so good at catching technical details, thanks for keeping me on my toes!
Quick rehash: I tweeted earlier today about the 52 of 53 Republicans who voted in February of 2020 that blackmailing Ukraine (withholding appropriated military materiel in exchange for anti-Biden propaganda) was not abusing power (i.e., all good) were useless hypocrites today.
Here is the roll-call senate.gov/legislative/LI…. Now apparently some folks are concerned because this vote did not actually stop the aid (which I did not say it did), just affirmed these 52 Republican senators are cool with the blackmail.
In February 2020, just 2 years ago, 52 of 53 Republican senators voted to allow (then) President Trump to block congressionally authorized sale of critical military supplies to the courageous President Zelensky of Ukraine, unless Ukraine manufactured anti-Democratic propaganda.
Whatever those 52 senators say now about how tough they're on Putin (criticizing Biden for not being tough enough) is insulting & useless BS until they acknowledge & apologize for their vote to allow Trump to blackmail Zelensky for their support of authoritarianism over democracy
