COVID Update: Biden just released his National COVID Preparedness Plan.

Even if you haven’t been paying much attention to COVID with Omicron fading, this is worth paying attention to. A lot of news in here. 1/
This plan really is about what is next & has 3 major elements:
-Protect against COVID-19
-Prepare for new variants
-Prevent schools & businesses from needing to close 2/
Protecting against COVID revolves around maximizing the tools we have particularly for the most at risk populations.

Tests, vaccines & therapies are critical to what we must do here & there are important initiatives in each category in the plan. 3/
The ongoing availability of tests is one key. 70 million free tests have been delivered. And starting next week free tests will be available at covidtests.gov.

Ubiquity of tests means increased freedom. 4/
Tests help when they help assure us we are negative. But when they’re positive, what then?

Therapeutics. This is where Biden’s next announcement comes in. They are launching the new “test to treat” program. It will allow anti-virals to be given right at the test side. 5/
Vaccines are the 3rd, & obviously the most critical element of COVID prevention. The plan focuses on finishing the vaccination effort with kids under 5 & boosting more & more Americans. 6/
Preparing for new variants is a critical & interesting part of the plan.

Thankfully the Administration is adopting the mindset of planning for variants not wishing them away.

This means: early warnings of a new variant, faster approvals & building stockpiles. 7/
Data collection, sequencing & wastewater are key focuses of early detection. The plan is then to approve & deliver new vaccines within 100 days.

It calls on Congress to step up & fund PPE, vaccines, therapeutics & other things to make sure we’re never caught off guard again. 8/
The plan calls for a COVID Variant Playbook to assess the impact of any new variant on contagiousness & severity & adjustments needed to shore up tests, treatments & vaccines. 9/
Preventing disruptions to schools & businesses is a third element of the plan.

It was a welcome site to see a commitment to new ventilation and a Clean Air in Buildings Checklist & new OSHA guidance as part of the plan. 10/
Fundamental to keeping schools & businesses open is paid sick leave. We are so very foolish if we don’t allow people to stay home with pay when they’re not well. This foolishness must change.

C’mon Congress. 11/
Besides those 3 elements there a number of things worth calling out in the plan.

Global vaccinations. The US has sent 475 million doses for free to 112 countries. This is what wealthy nations do. Before we’re done, that will more than double. Logistical support from AID too. 12/
Protecting the most vulnerable through prioritized access to boosters & treatments for immunocompromised, through nursing home improvements, through masking recommendations, through investments in long-COVID research. 13/
Increasing manufacturing capacity to 1 billion vaccines/year & focus on a single COVID vaccine for all variants. 14/
Launching a one stop shop website for Americans to easily assess local public health guidance & COVID activity in your area. 15/
Downturns in cases is not when we expect our leaders to rest. It’s when we expect them to plan.

I talked about needing a “reset” in February. That’s what this is. (And if it wasn’t for Russia we probably would have seen it in February). 16/
It is obvious this plan relied a lot on listening to outside experts. Kudos to everyone for pitching in & giving the team your ideas. 17/
No one can predict what happens next with any accuracy. But that doesn’t mean we can’t be prepared. That’s what leaders do. /end

NEW: The @CDCgov has issued updated its guidance for Americans & local governments to guide decision-making in response to the pandemic.

The guidance is clear & comprehensive & easy to find. 1/

cdc.gov
One primary takeaway is when Americans should wear masks depending on the level of COVID in the community.

These are the off ramps & on-ramps Americans & government leaders have been hoping for.

The details are important. 2/
The CDC’s approach is to look at 3 factors for every county.

-New COVID19 hospital admissions over last 7 days
-Percentage of hospital beds occupied by COVID patients
-New cases per 100,000 people over last 7 days

Counties were then classified low, medium or high. 3/

COVID Update: We have been through many stages of the pandemic.

Now as the country & various states prepare to lay out the plan ahead, there are some things they must do. 1/
Yesterday I participated in the rollout of California’s SMARTER plan— a plan to look ahead & prepare.

But planning is especially hard when it’s hard to have any idea what form the virus may come back in. Still leaders have no choice. 2/
It feels like a great time, with cases down, for our leaders to change the subject & move on to the one of many other challenges on the agenda.

Beat the ones aren’t. They are taking the time to dig in & reset even if the public doesn’t want to hear it. 3/

COVID Update: Today we hit the 2 year mark of the pandemic being declared by the WHO.

Here’s what we’re up against & what it means for what’s ahead. 1/
A- What makes SARS-CoV-2 unique?

There are more lethal bugs. There are more contagious bugs. But there are a combination of features which make this a particularly difficult enemy. 2/
SARS-CoV-2 is noteworthy for being a highly adaptable, shape-shifting virus.

To survive it’s has shorted the incubation cycle, altered its point of attack to avoid vaccines, become more infectious with kids & it’s only a couple of years in. 3/

COVID Update: Denmark has effectively declared COVID over. There are merits and flaws to their thinking.

There’s also the simple matter of how the US is just not Denmark. 1/
Denmark is the first EU country to eliminate mask mandates, vaccine passports, isolation protocols & all the rest.

And it’s not because the COVID wave is over there. 2/
Cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are all rising in Denmark read all time highs with the US equivalent of 1000 daily deaths.

BA2 is on the rise in Denmark and is outcompeting the original Omicron.

Yet Denmark is leading the way to say its all over. 3/

NEW: Pfizer files for approval of vaccines for kids 0-5.

There is more to this story and for people paying attention, I will add more info here soon. 1/
The last group of people to get approved for vaccinations also live under the most stringent rules, they have broad exposure & themselves can be highly infectious.

Leaving parents often with few good choices. 2/
In all likelihood only a small portion of the public will vaccinate their youngest kids.

For all the talk of politics driving vaccine decisions, it’s really age. 9 of 10 85 year olds are vaccinated & close to 9 in 10 10 year olds are not.3/

COVID Update: One of the next big questions of the pandemic outlook will likely revolve around what happens in Florida.

And not just because the governor has been so out of step. 1/
At this point in the pandemic, there is a lot of room for multiple approaches on how to live and how much risk to take.

2 people can stare out the window, look at the same facts & see very different things based on their attitudes. 2/
We all know people who are comfortable dining indoors & others who aren’t. Same with going to a sporting event or getting on a plane.

Neither is wrong. All these choices are hard & the judgment calls reflect our own views of life & risk. 3/
