My theory about the war is that pro-Ukraine people are over-optimistic about the short/medium term and pro-Russia people are over-optimistic about the long term.
I think Russia will eventually be able to force Ukraine to make serious concessions, and I'm skeptical of the prediction that it will face a protracted insurgency, but that some of the gains it makes will be short-lived and in the end the invasion will be a net negative.
Unfortunately, I also think it will be a net negative for the West, since a new Cold War is now inevitable, which means that we'll have to live with the fear of war for decades and spend more ressources on defense instead of stuff that actually increases people's well-being.
When I talk about a new Cold War, I don't just mean with Russia, because I think it will accelerate the formation of a new bloc with China, which is already trying to decouple from the US economically after Trump showed Beijing how vulnerable by using the FDPR to cripple Huawei.
Anyway, maybe this is totally wrong, most long-term predictions about that kind of things later prove to have been completely off, but I think Putin's decision will boost the worst elements in Western foreign policy so I'm extremely pessimistic and think we're basically fucked.

People are wrong to say that it's just because of racism, there are other factors (such as the pre-existing hostility toward Russia, the fact that it's closer to us and impact our security, etc.), but let's be real it's not as if racism had *nothing* to do with it.
It's not even that bad, I personally think that the evil of racism is hugely exaggerated compared to other things (just think about how e. g. someone like Bolton is treated vs. how someone who was caught saying something vaguely racist is treated), but it's silly to deny it.
As I was telling someone earlier, anti-woke people — and I'm one of them — have this tendency of rejecting en bloc everything woke people say, even when there is some of truth to what they're saying and you could just recognize it without buying the whole package.

To be clear, neither country seems to have passed a new law, rather the Attorney General in Czechia and the head of the National Criminal Agency in Slovakia announced they would use existing law to prosecute people expressing their support for Russia.
I agree the initial tweet is worded too strongly though. I looks as tough, at least in Czechia, not any support of Russia will be punished. Image

Tout le reste de l'article est à l'avenant, chaque paragraphe est plus dingue que le précédent, on croirait lire le récit d'une campagne dans un pays du tiers-monde.

NATO is not the whole story, but *of course* it's a big part of it, people who deny that are embarrassing themselves or rather they would be in a healthy intellectual environment where the kind of factors aptly identified below are not present.
We have countless testimonies spanning 3 decades *by American officials* who've spent hundreds of hours discussing this with their Russian counterparts saying those guys are genuinely freaking out about NATO, but no you should trust academics with pronouns in their bio instead 🙃
There are plenty of smart things you can say to nuance the basic realist story, e. g. how what started as concerns over NATO led to an ideological shift toward a form of pan-Russianism that has now taken a life of its own, but no they're going to go with the stupid thing.

Russian officials are speaking in front of Putin and they're all saying that Moscow should recognize the DNR and the LNR. Interestingly, they're talking about recognizing them as independent states, not annexing them as the Duma asked Putin to do.
This would mean that Russia is burying the Minsk agreement, thus admitting that it couldn't get what it has sought since 2014, but I guess that, unlike annexation by Russia, it wouldn't necessarily be permanent and would leave the door open for reintegration into Ukraine later.
This is correct, I was confused because at some point during the meeting Putin corrected one of the officials who was talking about annexing them, so they're basically telling Putin to sign the Duma's resolution.
