I wanted to do a thread on my interactions with Shane Warne. Will do one but before that, something more imp needs to be shared right now.

Here’s a #thread on #BCCI and the current media reports of a BCCI official attending selection committee meetings.

+
Chief selector Chetan Sharma should now come out on record and speak if any individual sat unconstitutionally in team selection meetings. In fact, he should add whether or not the selectors felt intimidated by someone’s presence. I know for sure they were not ‘comfortable’.

+
For the record, no office-bearers of the BCCI – other than secretary, who convenes meetings – are supposed to sit in selection committee meetings. I don’t think anyone would’ve dared do this if the likes of Amarnath, Vengsarkar, Srikkanth, Patil were chairing the committee.

+
Did any office bearer invite himself to a selection committee meeting and ask that a certain player should be selected? Yes. I don’t want to name the player because this is no fault of his. But the breach is a serious one. It is for Chetan Sharma to share these details.

+
Was a player lured from one franchise to another by being shown some ‘bigger picture’? Has any BCCI official been ‘too close’ to any IPL franchise – remember, franchises & BCCI officials should have no relation. The IPL governing council is there for it.

+
I’ll share another instance.

A captain of a franchise said something on air on the day of an IPL match some time ago that made a certain BCCI official feel uncomfortable because of ‘conflict’’. The BCCI official called up the player and asked him to tweet a clarification.

+
Why? Because the industry was busy connecting this BCCI official with the said franchise.

This has been such an unhealthy trend in Indian cricket over the last few years and has been eating away into the ecosystem.

+
I’ll share another instance. A major sponsor of the BCCI was at pains to explain how his company was peeved at the manner in which a BCCI official was associated officially with a rival brand, and they couldn’t do anything about it.

Scared of picking on BCCI.

+
Saha’s tweets/interviews must not be investigated as one-off. The committee that’s been appointed must investigate this thoroughly to track the larger malaise in Indian cricket. It doesn’t just end with Saha.

In fact, once Saha has been spoken to, he must be left alone.

+
Indian cricket needs more Sahas.

Were players lured by any individuals ahead of the IPL auction? The BCCI-appointed committee must ask each and every player or franchise official who may have faced any kind of pressure or over-indulgence to come forward and speak.

+
Instances don’t end: BCCI must find out what happened at the ICC between 2019 and 2020. Did any BCCI official go out of his way to harm India’s interests at the ICC? Did any BCCI official jump the ship in making statements that were not true?

+
On the day two new franchises were auctioned, a BCCI official in the room was conflicted with one of the bidders (on the day of the auction). The conflict was a huge one and it hasn’t been highlighted. Did the official make an effort to recuse himself from the auction process?

+
The BCCI asked all its stakeholders to refrain from signing up any crypto companies as sponsors – this was before the recent union budget. But one of BCCI’s own officials was busy partaking in a branding exercise.

Will the BCCI look into it?

+
After Nike quit as apparel sponsor of Indian cricket in 2020, the first time BCCI floated a RFP, no bidder came to the table and an embarrassed BCCI had to float a fresh RFP. Who’s fault was it?

The BCCI must investigate. Cricket has been taken for granted.

+
Was Virat Kohli spoken with by a ‘certain BCCI official’ when he quit T20 captaincy and later, when the Board announced that they were appointing a new ODI captain? Virat himself has said nobody spoke with him.

The BCCI still hasn’t said anything on the matter.

+
Recently, the BCCI appointed a new ‘head of medicine’ at the NCA. Was an attempt made by any individual in Indian cricket to interfere in the appointment process by bringing in committee members of their own choice to influence the selection?

BCCI must investigate.

+
In the last WTC cycle, did BCCI vote in favour of change in the WTC points system at the ICC, that almost resulted in India bowing out of the WTC (had they not won the series in Australia). Who were the individuals, from a cricketing standpoint, to vote in favour of this?

+
If the BCCI doesn’t answer these questions, it will never be able to begin on a fresh state. Indian cricket is in a state of absolute mess right now and the more the board refuses to ‘clean up’, the worse it will get in the near future.

Ends
Please avoid putting players' names in your replies / quote tweets. This is about bcci & not the players. Leave them alone and let them play their cricket.

It's bcci that needs to act.

#Thread -- The King!

“How ya doin mate? Good to see ya…”

It was a line he greeted every second person with when in India for the IPL. Shane Warne knew everybody, and everybody knew Shane Warne here.

India had become home after he became IPL's first buy in 2008. (1/25)
Greetings exchanged; he’d talk you into a corner wherever he could light up. The longer you stayed in conversation, the more he’d keep lighting up. I’ve not seen anyone smoke that vigorously. Not even SRK.

Chatting him up, though, was always great fun. (2/25)
It was party night at a South Mumbai five-star in 2019. Shane’s hosts had invited me for an evening with the man – just a casual get-together. I walked up, walked in, met him, and shook hands. “How ya doin mate? Good to see ya…”

That was the last time I met him. (3/25)

Shaadab, Nayaab, Cafe Bahar, Pista House -- the best biryani in Hyderabad?

Any suggestions?
Btw... the midnight buffet at Green Park Hotel is mindblowing! (Hyderabad)
Avoid advising Paradise please. Too overstated and extremely commercial (which is not a problem but gets ordinary).

The joy of Test cricket…

#Thread

Let me begin with a flashback. The year is 2014. India lose 1-3 in England & land in Australia three months later. Another challenge beckons. MS Dhoni is under pressure. A change in captaincy is round the corner. (1/25)
There’s little doubt who the next captain is going to be. He’s just turned 26. The Aussies hate His guts (rather, love to hate His guts). He loves how they hate Him. He makes statements, stands up for His team, picks up fights for the team, scores tons. (2/25)
A tiger is marking territory. The pugmarks are all over. “They were calling me a spoilt brat. I know you guys hate me. I like that,” He says.

They hate Him all the more.

Go you YouTube and search for His press conference from 2015 Jan. It's a classic! (3/25)

Thanks for the birthday wishes. : )

Here's a #Thread on #IPL.

Yesterday I shared the start & end date of IPL-2022. Must say I was a little surprised with some reverts. “74 games too many”, “1/6th of the year”, “Boring”, “jarring”, so on.

Really? Not quite. Let explain. (1/25)
Modern-day cricket, like any sport, has essentially stood on three pillars: 1) those who play it, 2) those who watch it, 3) those who administer & finance it.

The fourth pillar is of the thinking minds. Those who speak for the game and protect its identity & uniqueness. (2/25)
Here’s where I believe cricket has changed: The three pillars of the game I mentioned have steadfastly moved in one direction, at least the majority of them, for better or worse (that’s for another day).

And the fourth pillar has shown little interest in catching up. (3/25)

A dream waiting to come true...

Let’s take a break from cricket and look at India’s other sports aspirations. A big development took place today – Mrs Nita Ambani made a presentation at IOC to host the 2023 ‘Session’ in Mumbai. It was accepted unanimously.

+
Indian Olympic Assn (IOA) president Narinder Batra, Youth Affairs & Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and India’s first-ever individual Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra were part of the Indian delegation with Mrs Ambani.
India last hosted an Olympic session in 1983.

+
Royals, academicians, former sportsmen and women, corporate leaders, and more – the members who participate in an Olympic session make for a very unique set. The decisions taken at an Olympic session are considered final. Mumbai will host the session in May-June 2023.

The BCCI has laid a foundation stone for the newly planned National Cricket Academy (NCA) on the outskirts of Bangalore.

The contract has been given to L&T.

Was wondering how a World Class academy must look like.

Some thoughts in this #thread... 👇🏾

+
The site is a 40-acre land in Devanahalli, near the Bangalore International Airport.

This has been one of BCCI's pet projects and has been pending too long now.

Work is finally set to begin.

Thought I'll put together a list of what one must expect...

+
• Minimum two cricket grounds with ICC-mandated parameters.

• Outdoor practice areas with pitches from Aus, Eng, synthetic, hybrid and Indian. Portable pitches.

* There should a nothing less than 30 to 35 outdoor practice pitches.

• Adequate changing rooms & rest rooms.
