Lynching is about to become a federal crime. One senator partially responsible for preventing it from happening in the previous century: Richard Russell, whose name adorns the Senate’s most storied office building.
Chuck Schumer had proposed renaming the building after John McCain instead of Richard Russell, an arch-segregationist and opponent of civil rights. Some senior Republicans didn’t like the idea.
Last week Lindsey Graham told me he now wants to rename the Capitol Visitor Center for John McCain and John Lewis, the late lawmaker and civil rights icon.
There has also been an effort also to replace Georgia’s statue of racist Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens with a statue of John Lewis.
Pat Toomey rallies Republicans against what he calls "mission creep" at the Fed, including a push by Democrats to weigh in with new regulations on climate risk. "I don’t think there should be a Politburo that gets to allocate capital in America." bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
Toomey has opposed Sarah Bloom Raskin over her previous calls for regulators to act on climate and complained the Fed has gotten behind the curve on inflation while wading into areas like racial justice and education policy not in their purview.
Toomey's now leading a blockade of Raskin in a dispute about the answers he says the Senate should be able to get from the Fed and Raskin about her role in Colorado firm Reserve Trust getting a master account at the Fed.
FIRST on #FridayNightZillow tonight!
***BIG SUR PARADISE***
~30 acres. 3 "passive solar" homes (Yurt-like?) built into the hillside by the late architect Mickey Muennig. $6.95M. Hopefully this will transport you away from your troubles for just a bit...🧵 zillow.com/homedetails/50…
A great place to just...hang out! I could see @HamillHimself's Luke Skywalker hanging out and meditating here, maybe drinking some green milk. #FridayNightZillow
I could live here. Something cool in every pic. Would probably want to build a fourth house though with all the toys and ... plumbing? #FridayNightZillow
There's precedent for changing the rules to prevent minority from blocking or delaying noms in the last decade. Dem nuke/GOP SCOTUS nuke/GOP debate hours nuke/GOP nukes Judiciary's quorum rules for SCOTUS/Barrett.
So not your typical day covering the Banking Committee.
Toomey plans to block quorum for Raskin; complains he hasn’t gotten answers to questions Re: he work with Reserve Trust.
Brown mad, says Toomey agreed to votes today weeks ago.
All 5 noms now caught in scrum
Getting around Toomey’s blockade would require backing of at least one Republican on the committee or floor action by all 50 Dems. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
Unlike with the blockade of Amy Coney Barrett by Senate Ds, which Graham bypassed because it merely required breaking a committee rule, this could require detonating a procedural nuke because Rs and Ds are equally divided.
