A new Missouri bill would prohibit women leaving the state to get an abortion.

If this style of legislation is somehow found legal, it would have a huge impact in a post-Roe v Wade world. washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/…
In Texas, where Roe might as well not exist, half of the state’s abortion patients cross state lines or request abortion pills from Aid Access, an overseas service that sends pills in the mail while sidestepping U.S. abortion laws.

nytimes.com/2022/03/06/ups…
And yes, this is obviously unconstitutional.

But so is a six-week abortion ban (for now). Ask a Texas abortion patient how those Constitutional right are working out.
It’s almost as if Hallmark-style “holidays” aren’t moving the needle on women’s rights?!

Since this is getting some attention, let me plug “Jailed for Abortion in El Salvador” a documentary I made w @GiladThaler

We know what happens when you outlaw abortion. Women are jailed, maternal mortality jumps & patients turn to the black market.

Rep Schakowsky & Rep Strickland are reintroducing a bill that would repeal the Helms Amendment, a decades-old provision that prohibits U.S. dollars from directly funding abortion services overseas.
Pres. Biden repealed the so-called "global gag rule" via executive order in Jan.

Officially the Mexico City Policy, barred any NGO from “perform[ing] or actively promote abortion as a method of family planning” using funds from any source as a condition of receiving US dollars.
Think of Helms as the international version of the Hyde Amendment.

In a written follow up, Judge Barrett declined to answer whether abortion should be punishable by death.

Today, the Senate Judiciary committee is expected to vote on Judge Barrett to the Supreme Court.

Questions from @SenWhitehouse:
UPDATE: Republicans have voted to advance Amy Coney Barrett’s Supreme Court nomination despite Democrats boycotting the vote.

A full Senate vote is expected Monday.
It's normal for SCOTUS nominees to decline questions, but noteworthy that Barrett has declined questions that other Justices were comfortable answering, specifically reproductive issues like birth control.

Trump's COVID "cure" - an unapproved Regeneron antibody cocktail - was developed using cells derived from aborted fetal tissue.

That's a practice the White House and anti-abortion rights groups oppose.

On @CBSNews:
cbsnews.com/news/regeneron…
Here's how it works:

- HEK 293T cells are a cell line originally derived from the kidney tissue of a fetus aborted in the Netherlands in the 1970s.

- Those cells are used to test potency. They don't end up in the final product, but they're a part of the testing process.
Per Regeneron:

The cells "were used in testing the antibody candidates' ability to neutralize the virus" and helped researchers "determine the 'best' two antibodies, which now make up the REGN-COV2 cocktail."

Yes, there were no questions on abortion or Roe v Wade last night.

HOWEVER, we did get a look into what Trump's strategy might be for addressing Amy Coney Barrett's stance on Roe v Wade.

Here's exactly what Biden & Trump said:
Biden: The president is opposed to Roe v Wade. This election it's on the ballot.

Trump: You don't know it's on the ballot. There’s nothing happening here. And you don’t know [Amy Coney Barrett's] view on Roe v Wade
n.b.

Abortion is actually literally on the ballot in two states: Colorado and Louisiana via ballot measures.

CO - A 22-week abortion ban

LA - A Constitutional amendment that would clarify the state's laws do not support abortion

but I digress...

The first #Debates2020 is officially underway!

I'm looking into everything the candidates have to say about abortion rights, women's health and if the moderator #askaboutabortion. Follow along on this thread 👇👇👇
First topic is Supreme Court! I imagine we'll be getting to Roe v Wade sooner than later! Buckle up!
Biden says Roe v Wade is "at stake right now."

President appears to reject that, saying that we don't know how Amy Coney Barrett feels about Roe v. Wade and that abortion isn't on the ballot.

Here's what we know about ACB's record on abortion rights:

Here's everything we know about Amy Coney Barrett's judicial abortion record.

Unlike other SCOTUS shortlisters, Barrett offers a clear judicial record siding with regulations that restrict access to abortion.

On @CBSNews:

cbsnews.com/news/amy-coney…
Barrett has three years of experience as a federal judge, serving on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals since 2017.

In those three years, Barrett has already ruled on two abortion-related cases, both times favoring restrictions on access to abortion.

Here's more on those cases:
Box v. Planned Parenthood:

Barrett joined dissenters who favored an Indiana law that would have required doctors to notify the parents of a minor seeking an abortion.

Unlike parental notification laws in other states, Indiana's didn't include a judicial bypass provision.
