The final 32 is before us.
What is the most iconic animal/creature in B.C.
Here is the updated bracket. Voting begins now. #bcpoli
Orca Whale vs. Pacific White-Sided Dolphin
The Orca Whales along BC's coast are some of the most studied whales in the world.
The White Sided Dolphin love company. They often swim in groups of 10 up to 100.
Humpback Whale vs. Gray Whale
The Humpback Whale loves to feed along BC's coast as part of migration. They use what is called bubble bet feeding.
About 20,000 Gray Whales migrate each year along BC's coast and 200 or so resident whales will stay and feed.
Sockeye Salmon vs. Chinook Salmon
The Sockeye has many names. Also known as the red, kokanee or blueback salmon.
The Chinook also has many names. Also known as the king, Quinnat and Tyee salmon.
Harbour Seal vs. Sea Otter
Harbour Seals love to live within 20 kms of the coast but some have been found in rivers and lakes.
Sea Otters are experiencing a bit of a population boom, up to 900 or so in BC up 20% a year.
Kermode Bear vs. Moose
Most Kermode Bear's are black. But what makes them so unique are the 100 to 500 with fully white fur.
Only male Moose has antlers and is on the quarter.
Raccoon vs. Caribou
The mighty trash panda are protected in BC under the Wildlife Act. The like to eat garbage.
Caribou populations continue to decline in BC, down from 40,000 to 15,000.
Grizzly Bear vs. Wolf
According to the BC Government, Bc is one of the last places in North America where predators like the Grizzly and their prey play out millennia-old roles.
The province has been killing wolves to save caribou. The Wolf themselves is an iconic Bc creature.
Vancouver Island Marmot vs. Cougar
Back in 2003 there were only about 30 wild Van Isle Marmots. Now there are closer to 250 to 300.
If you run into a Cougar, make yourself look big.
Ogopogo vs. Peacocks
The Ogopogo received it's name in 1924. I look forward to the party in Kelowna to celebrate 100 years.
The blue-headed peacocks are male and they fan their feathers to flirt.
Canuck the Crow vs. Coombs Goats
Twitter loves both of these things.
Canucks the Crow disappeared in August 2019.
The Coombs Goats are still on the roof.
Sasquatch vs. Oak Bay Deer
Here me out here. Oak Bay could search the woods of BC and find a Sasquatch. Then let it loose in Oak Bay to help control the deer population and save the gardens.
Chinatown Otter vs. UVic Bunnies
The Chinatown Otter is a river otter than feasted on a 50 year old fish.
It has been 11 years now, but there was a time when Bunnies roamed free on the University of Victoria campus.
Bald Eagle vs. California Quail
One of the tricks I learned after becoming a frequent BC Ferries user is you can often see Bald Eagles on the way to Twassawsen.
The California Quails were introduced to Vancouver Island sometime in the 1880s or 1890s.
Blue Heron vs. Hummingbird
There are around 5,000 to 6,000 great blue herons in B.C.
There are four species of hummingbirds in BC, the two most common are the Rufous Hummingbird and Anna's Hummingbird.
Raven vs. Canada Goose
Depicted as both a creator and a trickster, Raven’s exploits are told in hundreds of First Nations stories from the Tsimshian, Haida, Heiltsuk, Tlingit and Kwakwaka’wakw.
Canada geese return to the same breeding grounds every year.
Stellar's Jay vs. Northern Spotted Owl
Although Steller's Jay primarily lives in coniferous forests, it can be found in other types of forests as well.
The northern spotted owl remains threatened due to competition with invasive species including the barred owl.

The final quadrant. This is the specialty part of the bracket. Some are figments of the imagination. Some don't fit into other categories. Some are individual/groups of well known animal(s). One is a human in a suit. Let's go. #bcpoli
Ogopogo vs. Fin
The Ogopogo is more than a creature in a lake. It is a symbol of a city. A logo on a jersey. A statue in a park. And maybe a log floating in the water.
Fin is the mascot of the Vancouver Canucks.
Peacocks vs. Stanley Park Coyotes
I left Metro Vancouver before the whole peahens/peacocks take over Surrey thing. They also like Beacon Hill Park.
@j_mcelroy and I once watched a guy run around trying to get close enough to take a selfie with a Coyote at the SP pitch and putt.

Half the first round is done.
Dinner is over.
Now to the second half of the bracket.
Let's begin in the air. #bcpoli
Bald eagle vs. barn swallow
There is a country who uses the eagle as one of it's symbols. Then there is BC, where eagles gather in larger numbers THAN ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD.
Barn swallows are currently at risk.
Brant vs. California Quail
The brant or brent goose. There is a Brant festival every year in Parksville and Qualicum Beach.
They may have California in the name, by the Cali Quail is now a BC mainstay.

British Columbia has many water animals. Lets vote on some of them. #bcpoli
The Orca Whale vs. Chum Salmon.
There are five species of salmon. They are all in the bracket. Chum just got unlucky and drew the Orca in the first round.
The local NHL club has an Orca on it's jersey when it is not a skate.
#bcpoli
White side dolphin vs. Dall's Porpoise
The white sided dolphins are the ones that like to show off with all the jumping.
The Dall's porpoise is the largest of all the porpoises.

I know you guys feel like you are cheating on @j_mcelroy. But he will get over it.
Let's do a bracket to determine the most iconic BC creature. #bcpoli
Beginning with land animals.
The Kermode Bear vs. the North American Beaver.
One is the star of an Imax film voiced by Ryan Reynolds and is also known as the spirit bear.
The other is on the nickel.
Moose vs. Bison
There are about 170,000 Moose in B.C. and over 70% live in Northern BC.
Both races of bison are found in BC, mainly in the northeast.
