see this national disaster catastrophe zone targeted seat funding emergency declaration omnishambles Morrison is currently lumbering through? The constantly confused and confusing seemingly senseless series of announcements? Staring in horror going why why why?
yeah that is because the entire skip fire this total and utter shitshow is being driven by his religiosity and factional manoeuvres within the Liberal Party. Nothing else. Their motives are wholly divorced from the national interest.
every time a press gallery doyen gravely pronounces that the prime minister, a politician, is being political - like we can not see it for ourselves - they spread the myth that this lethal shambles is about voters. But it is just press conferences at ten paces. Thanks, Davids.
“there is an election looming” dead set. There is a prime minister deliberately blurring the boundaries of executive power over armed agents of the state too. Maybe read the Defence Legislation Amendment Act 2019 instead of bleating about how confusing it all is.
pretty sure this amendment is mostly about immunity from criminal prosecution when ADF cause harm while deployed “domestically”. Maybe the GG could share what he thinks it is for, since Morrison is apparently off to Yarralumla to seek executive (“emergency”) powers tonight.
the prime minister will seek emergency powers from the Governor General to “enable financial assistance to flow to flood victims” omfg plzzzzz. He could get centrelink to do that. Like when the optics of centrelink queues in March 2020 upset his comms strategy.
financial assistance for flood victims can be done with a phone call to Hank Jongen. Executive powers to deploy the military with impunity requires a trip to Yarralumla. One of these things is not like the other.
Scott Morrison: a national disaster declaration does not mean more funds from the Commonwealth.
Nobody in the press gallery: okay so what does it mean? That the prime minister and defence minister can deploy ADF with statutory impunity?

good morning from unceded Terramerragal clan lands☀️today on #Insiders are Guardian politics legend Amy Remeikis, ABC everyman Stan Grant and Westralian politics corro Lanai Scarr. The interview is with shadow defence minister Brendan O’Connor.
opening spiel: the prime minister promises a massive troop build up (by 2040) but there were not enough on the ground when needed. #Insiders
what’s the Morrison perspective, skip? Well, the prime minister “played it safe” in Lismore and was “careful to avoid any confrontations” - where “confrontation” means voters expressing their opinion to a politician. #Insiders
reminder that Menzies abandoned the country during WWII and was sacked from his party and then from government. These facts are literally constitutive of the Liberal Party.
just because media bosses have raised generations of journalists to believe and disseminate Liberal Party war propaganda does not make it true. The Liberal Party record of wartime leadership is one of unmitigated failures.
by literally constitutive I mean Menzies abandoned the country to indulge his anglophilia during WWII, then was sacked from the UAP and from government; then formed the Liberal Party and sat like a dead weight on post war possibility for almost two decades.
As prime minister, Malcolm Turnbull announced a $50 billion defence spend immediately prior to the 2016 campaign. But here he is on RN gravely pronouncing that the big spending defence announcement Scott Morrison will reportedly make today is “political”.
Idk how we would all muddle through without these white males from the wealthiest enclaves of eastern Sydney telling us that politicians do political things.
Turnbull’s defence procurement minister went on to trouser a truckload of cash to be a defence procurement consultant. Turnbull went on to lose 16 seats, then the prime ministership, and then the subsequent by-election after he left parliament in a huff.
good morning from unceded Terramerragal☀️today on #Insiders are ABC radio host Raf Epstein, Guardian politics editor Katharine Murphy, and murdoch columnist Peter van Onselen. The interview is with Peter Dutton.
opening spiel: “natural disaster at home” - he means climate disaster - and humanitarian disaster abroad.
what’s the Morrison perspective, skip? Well, the invasion in another hemisphere is “reshaping the [Australian] election contest”. #Insiders
the montage is politicians and journalists talking about war, footage of the Putin invasion of Ukraine, and the usual dominance of Morrison clips, including that carefully rehearsed chest thumping line that was delivered in response to a dixer from Uhlmann. #Insiders
