NOW: Save Our Schools Network (@savelumadschool) reports the initial findings of an autopsy conducted on the remains of Lumad school teacher, Chad Booc.
Dr. Raquel Fortun (@Doc4Dead): I can confirm that I was able to autopsy the embalmed remains of Booc last Monday in Mandaue City, Cebu. I had no access to the other victims, and the death was caused by massive blood loss due to assault by firearms charged.
Fortun: That was the findings of the medico legal, as indicated in the death certificate. I was only able to locate one bullet, but the x-ray shows a lot more bullet fragments.
Fortun: I can tell you where he was not shot: head, neck, left upper extremities, and the lower extremities. He had multiple gunshot wounds. How many? I’m still anlyzing it because of the complexity of the shots, they’re close to one another—especially in the chest and abdomen.
Fortun: The embalming stiched together the bullet wounds. So, maraming limitations.
Fortun: All I can tell you from now is that Booc sustained very serious injuries of the trunk from multiple gunshot wounds. There were internal hemorrhages.
Fortun: He had lacerations in the lungs and the diaphragm. In fact, part of the liver and the stomach also had a laceration. A part of the spleen, small, and large intestines also had lacerations.
Fortun: I would say the most serious injuries was the very severe fractures of the spinal column (thoracic vertebra 5-8).
Fortun: We try to explain what those bullets speak. A step further is whether we can reconstruct the shooting. However, we don’t have information yet to the other victims. We also didn’t have access to the victims’ clothes, dapat kasama yan sa autopsy.
Fortun: The only information I have with the scene is the pictures on Facebook. But I’m not even sure who they are. Unfortunately, the photos have been blurred.
Fortun was referring to the alleged photos of the New Bataan incident posted by the military.
Fortun: Booc also had a very bad gunshot wound on the elbow region. The x-rays clearly show that the upper arm bone had a fracture. How could you be hit like that?
Fortun, calling for additional information surrounding the death of the New Bataan 5: These were civilians. But in the Philippines, killing is just ordinary. So, please, investigate.
Fortun: I can be clear that Chad had very serious injuries, and many of them could’ve caused instantaneous death. He will not survive in those injuries, even if naitakbo ka sa ospital at may state-of-the-art equipment and surgeons.
Fortun on the range of the shooter: Most likely, I would say, the range is "indeterminate probably distant.” Distant is anywhere from a feet and beyond. I was able to find one bullet, and I can say it’s a high-velocity bullet (rifle), not a handgun.
Tony La Viña, legal counsel, says more information is needed to file necessary charges. The decision to pursue charges will depend on the family. However, for now, may be possible to file charges to those who red-tagged Booc.

#IWD2022
