The same people that have been lecturing genocide survivors on how to respond to our perpetrators and policing our conversations to ensure that we always highlight #NotAllSerbs are the same people that are perfectly fine with punishing every single Russian for Putin's actions.
There has never been a genocide event in which I have not seen a genocide survivor from Bosnia or Cambodia or Rwanda or even the Holocaust have to highlight that they do not hate every single member of the genocidaires ethnic/national group b/c otherwise people are uncomfortable.
Every single event I have been to and I have both been to and organised thousands of these types of events at this point...has had genocide survivors highlight #NotAll members of that ethnic/national group participated in the genocide...and yet suddenly?
It's actually beyond hypocritical to see all of this play out. I've had to chose my words carefully my entire life in order to ensure I do paint an entire ethnic group by the actions of their leaders, genocidaires, and armed forces. But now collective punishment is actually fine!
We either agree that collective responsibility and therefore collective punishment is not okay across the board or we don't...but truly I am tired of the sheer hypocrisy being exhibited on the daily during this war.
& this isn't coming from Ukrainians but from others, mainly Westerners, who have spent a long time policing our conversations, our pain, our own recollection of memories only to turn around and do the same thing to Russians...and it be perfectly fine and socially acceptable.
I think Ukrainians are entitled to feel whatever way they want about their aggressors, just as Bosniaks are and just as Jews are and just as the Tutsi are.
