Week 81 #FridaysForFuture. The European farm lobby is trying to get rid of any progress made towards the climate and biodiversity crises by exploiting Putin’s attack on Ukraine.
Here is a 🧵about how the EU is trying to disguise false solutions as #FoodSecurity concerns: 1/
There is increasing concern that @vonderleyen and @TimmermansEU will give in to pressures by the farm lobby to postpone or get rid of the upcoming EU Restoration law and a new law that controls the use of pesticides. 2/
The farm lobby is trying to convince @EUAgri to channel huge subsidies into the livestock sector, and are asking that areas used for biodiversity not be used for food but for animal feed. 3/
The number of people already starving in the world is shocking and now the UN warns that we will see people starve possibly within months due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The EU has to possibility to offer emergency food help, but instead are focusing on false solutions. 4/
Instead of the EU releasing food to those in need, they are instead burning food for biofuels. Huge amounts of food like cereals and vegetable oil could immediately go to feeding those in need, but instead, they’re being fed to cars. 5/
No more maladaptation, here are the real solutions:
- Stop burning excesses of food that can be given to people
- Shift our farm systems away from intensive agriculture such as the overproduction and overproduction of livestock.
- Stop intensive and harmful fertilisation
6/
Most, if not all these decisions are made without consulting the environmental NGOs and allowing the intensive agriculture lobbyists to control EU Agri yet again. Please @jwojc@LinsNorbert - listen to the science, not the farm lobby. 7/
To delay or destroy #EUFarm2Fork and #RestoreNature and #Pesticide laws means a huge and real threat to food security. There needs to be a focus on protecting our soils, waters, biodiversity and air or else the climate crisis will see more people starve. 8/end

Can we stop teaching kids in school that racism is just being mean to black people. This is why so many white people now as adults say that they're not racist because it's partly due to them having no clue what racism actually is. We cannot combat racism without proper education.
This tweet reflects upon the poor education I have seen in the UK, but also in many other parts of the world. I went to a Christian school in the UK even though many students including myself weren't. In our weekly religion class, we were only taught about Christianity -
I remember as a kid thinking how backwards this is because I remember kids at school telling me that they were Sikh or Muslim and I wanted to learn about those religions instead. I cannot imagine how it must feel to be so excluded in school based on your skin colour or religion.
This is a 🧵 about environmental injustices. The oil industry knew about climate change in the 1950’s. They knew that the emissions created by companies such as oil would melt the ice caps and raise sea levels. 1/9
There is no denying that fossil fuel companies are profiting from the overconsumption of coal, gas and oil. They have done this despite the science telling them not to and despite seeing how climate change is already detrimental to people and nature. 2/9
This is made possible by the ever growing investments made to fossil fuel industries. Around $1.2 trillion went to fossil fuel investments in 2018 alone. 2/9
