How to start walking, to get active, even if you have never exercised
As part of my #ship30for30 Cohort, I wrote my first atomic essay about one of my favorite activities #Walking🚶. Here it is as a 🧵
1/12 Moving more improves our health - We all know that. But...
We spend hours and hours sitting on our desks, and then we eat, and then we sleep. And we repeat.
2/12 To get out of this endless cycle, I signed up for gym memberships. But that gathered dust, while showing up as debit on my bank cards. I found a better way, and best of all it was free.
3/12 I started Walking ! 10,000 steps a day
It doesn't cost anything, No new shoes or a new dress,I could do it any time of the day and at any place.
It worked wonders for my physical and mental wellbeing
4/12 How did I get started -
First, I made an announcement about walking 10000 steps every day.
In the last week of May 2021, I promised my friends and family that within 10 days I will start walking 10000 steps every day.
5/12
Second, I started small -
I had never done more than 800-1000 steps before getting tired and needing a break. I started small - My first day of the walk was 2000 steps - about 20 minutes
6/12
Third, I split walking schedules into manageable chunks
I would walk 1000 steps when I woke up, 2000 steps after breakfast, 2000 steps after lunch, 2000 steps in evening, and 3000 steps after dinner and before sleep.
7/12
Fourth, I started measuring
Nothing fancy, just the standard step counter on my mobile phone.
8/12
Fifth, I dedicated time
First few days it was 20-30 mins, later increasing this to 60-90 mins every day. Not necessarily in one session.
9/12
Then I did 10,000 steps
On the Sixth day.
A big mental barrier was gone. I now knew, I could do this.
This day, I had walked 10764 steps and 6.5 Kms in all.
10/12
And then this became a habit. I started looking forward to walking 30-40 mins at a stretch 2-3 times a day.
This brought a transformation - Physically I was more active, mentally this was bringing calm, and my sleep was better.
11/12
I have done more than 4.6 million steps, nearly 3000 Kms in about 8 months. If a guy like me could do it, you can do it.
