๐บ๐ฆ Then Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine and their lives changed forever.
๐ช We spoke to LGBTQ+ Ukrainians who became soldiers to fight for their country โ and their rights.๐งต bit.ly/3KZRjAB
๐จโโ๏ธ Borys is a gay 26-old-year old former paramedic.
๐ณ๏ธโ๐ He went straight from enjoying beers in Germany to taking up arms in Kyiv โ one of many queer soldiers who have joined the resistance.
๐ "It wasnโt a hard decision for me," Borys told us from his army unit.
๐ฑ Many LGBTQ+ Ukrainians use dating apps to stay in touch and talk tactics.
๐ฌ "I checked Grindr and Hornet just to check out whoโs nearby and who stayed here," Borys said.
๐ช "Mostly it's people who volunteer for the army or serve in the defence forces."
๐ฃ๏ธ โMy favourite places in Kyiv are now in ruins,โ says Oleg.
๐จโ๐ฆ The 22-year-old former beer sommelier signed up to the armed forces along with his father after first getting his family out of the country.
๐ Oleg came out as bi in 2019, influencing his desire to fight.
๐ฌ From Kyiv, Oleg told us he had "never encountered a negative attitude" in the capital as an #LGBTQ citizen โ something he wants to protect.
๐ค He says war has brought people together.
๐ด But he sometimes hides his sexuality, wary of how the older generation might react.
โช๏ธ Ukraine legalised gay sex in 1991, but some conservative attitudes remain in the Orthodox Christian nation.
๐ข The far-right has previously targeted the LGBTQ+ community and Lenny Emson of @KyivPride warned that homophobic groups and individuals have also joined the army.
โฐ Dmytro is a pan, non-binary 23-year-old, who gets up at 6am every day for shooting training.
๐ฃ๏ธ "I didnโt want to go to the army, but then all of this went down, and I volunteered," he told us.
๐ด He says he keeps track of time by counting the days of war.
๐ Spotting Dmytro's sparkly nails, a training inspector hoped he was "just an aesthetic person".
๐จ๏ธ But added: "Actually, I donโt care whoever you are. You are here to kill the invader, thatโs what matters."
โ๏ธ Not everyone is sure the harmony will outlive the war, though.
๐ฃ๏ธ โWhen the war is over, I think we will have to fight for human rights again,โ says Vladislav, a gay soldier in Kiev.
๐ Ukraine ranks 39th in Europe in terms of #LGBTQ+ rights, according to @ILGAEurope.
๐บ๐ฆ But if there is "no more Ukraine", he fears further repression.
๐ฎ So what does the future hold for these #LGBTQ+ soldiers in Ukraine?
๐ฃ๏ธ โFirst, we have to win the war and stop it," Oleg. "Then you can call me again and weโll speak.โ
๐บ๐ธ Around 1 in 200 Americans aged 65 and over are trans.
๐ณ๏ธโโง๏ธ As the first generation of trans people reaches old age, healthcare systems are unprepared.
๐ For #TransAwarenessWeek, we spoke to trans people about growing old. ๐งต
๐ด Social isolation
๐ด Housing discrimination
๐ด Lack of safe medical spaces
๐ด ...and much more.
๐ต The challenges trans elders face are often similar to those faced by trans people of all ages, but exacerbated as they get older, says Kylie Madhav, senior director at @sageusa.
๐ฝ๏ธ Elizabeth Coffey was a star in the early films of cult film-maker John Waters.
๐ฅ While breaking ground for trans representation on screen, she faced rejection when seeking medical care.
๐ Later in life, hormone replacement therapy has caused issues, she told @Openly.
๐ถ Let's take a look at some of this year's queer nominations. ๐งต
๐ต @brandicarlile is one of the most nominated artists this year โ coming in just behind @Beyonce and @kendricklamar, and being tied with @Adele on seven nominations.
๐ฟ For the second time, she might snap up the coveted 'Album of the Year'.
๐ @RandyRainbow has been nominated for his first-ever Grammy.
๐ง The comedian and songwriter is up for the 'Best Comedy Album' award for 'A Little Brains, a Little Talent'.
๐๏ธ From the Iliad to the Odyssey, Lesbos has had a central part in Ancient Greek history.
โ๏ธ One of its most famous inhabitants was the 6th century B.C. poet Sappho, whose lyrical poems explored her love of women and their beauty โ sometimes even venturing into the erotic.
๐ฉ Sappho was regarded as one of the greatest poets of her time.
๐ Today, not much is known about her life, and much of her work has been lost over the centuries.
๐ฉโโค๏ธโ๐โ๐ฉ But Sappho's homoerotic writing โ and possible personal life โ has been discussed since Hellenistic times.
โ๐ฟ Black, British and queer โ but often overlooked.
๐ฌ๐ง It's #BlackHistoryMonth in the UK and we're looking at those who shaped Black British queer history - and those still changing the world today.
๐ Here are some of the Black #LGBTQ+ pioneers you should know. ๐งต
Ken "Snakehips" Johnson (1914-1941)
๐ท A jazz bandleader and dancer, Johnson was a leading figure in Black British music in the '30s and '40s.
๐๏ธ Part of the first Black British band in residency at the infamous Cafรฉ de Paris, he died when the club got bombed during the Blitz.
Demi Stokes (b.1991)
โฝ๏ธ The @ManCity and England player was part of the Euro 2022 winning team, which has been credited with spiking interest in women's football.
๐ Stokes came out publicly last year by announcing she was expecting a child with her partner Katie.
