🗣️‘Every woman police officer I know has been sexually assaulted by a colleague’

While the force has tried to pin a culture of toxic masculinity on a few ‘bad apples’, misogyny and abuse continues to blight the profession

I’ve been speaking to a dozen female police officers in the last year for a documentary called Bad Apples, writes @cjmcgoogan

They have told me male cops aren’t just assaulting members of the public – but also their own.
🔴Female police officers describe being the target of misogyny from their colleagues along a spectrum from sexist banter to bullying, domestic abuse and sexual assault, including rape
“Every woman officer I know has been sexually assaulted [by a colleague],” says Karen, a former officer.

“It’s just accepted that’s something we have to put up with.”
Shockingly, they also describe a pattern in which it’s female officers who are forced out after they report this behaviour: “In the police, you do not make complaints,” says Karen

🗣️“It’s career suicide.”
The police have traditionally tried to pin misogyny on a few rogue officers – using what has become known as the “bad apples” defence.

In the past year, it has become clear the problem is more widespread, writes @cjmcgoogan
In February the Independent Office of Police Conduct uncovered misogynistic and racist behaviour at Charing Cross Police Station, including messages about rape and domestic abuse.

✍️I’ve found this to be just the thin end of the wedge, writes @cjmcgoogan
Sue Fish, former chief constable of Nottinghamshire Police, has been vocal about misogyny in the police since Sarah Everard was killed
Within minutes of us meeting at her home in the East Midlands, she’s in tears as she tells me about the two times she was sexually assaulted by different senior colleagues – in around 1993 and 2007 – one of whom was a superintendent
Sue reported the second incident to her boss, who said it wasn’t a surprise from that officer.

➡️The officer remained in his position.
