🚨🚨 There are around 14 patients in #Wales on ventilated beds with #Covid19, some will be primarily in for other things but have the virus.

There are 50 unoccupied ventilated beds and 157 beds with non-Covid patients.
We have seen a sharp rise in patients with Covid in general beds over the past couple of weeks but the latest estimates indicate that 75% were not in hospital primarily because of the virus, but for other reasons.

Covid may have exacerbated a condition to impact a patient.
A significant proportion of the patients in hospital with Covid-19 caught the virus in hospital.

For the most recent week, it is estimated to be around 264 patients, with a total of 11,095 since the start of the pandemic.
Over the past few weeks, the number of Covid cases in Wales has been rising as has the % of those being tested coming back positive.

This coincides with the waning of the booster vaccines, in particular among older people.

🚨🚨 BBC Wales News - ‘There are over 1200 Covid19 in hospitals patients across Wales.. the highest level since last March’

FACT CHECK

➡️ On 21 March there were 130 patients actively being treated for Covid. The number quoted includes anyone in hospital who had a +ve test

The BBC journalist is spouting out the same line the Welsh Health Minister gave at a press briefing earlier on. I know some of the journalists there understand the numbers so disappointing stuff like this gets broadcast.
The 1200 includes anyone with a positive test regardless of reason for being in hospital, and those who no longer have Covid but are recovering, or may be ready for discharge but no care in community.

Also includes those who caught the virus in hospital.

🚨🚨 Welsh Health Minister - ‘Currently more than 1200 in hospital beds at the moment. This is the highest level we have seen since last March’

FACT CHECK

1,272 occupied by a Covid case, which is not same as a Covid patient. Around 80% are primarily in for other reasons

❌❌
Significant numbers of the patients actually catch the virus in hospital.

High prevalence in the community will make this harder to control.
Data published last week shows that while patients with Covid have been rising, those primarily in for the virus was relatively flat.

80% of patients in hospital were not being actively treated for Covid, with the infection being incidental to main cause of hospitalisation.

🚨🚨 Over the pandemic, for those aged 1-19, the leading cause of excess mortality was Suicide and injury or poisoning of undetermined intent, followed by Accidental poisoning, Homicide/probable homicide

➡️ Any murder of a child is horrific but to see these stats is shocking
The numbers of deaths are low but are above the average.

Suicide and injury or poisoning of undetermined intent (12 excess deaths, a 12.0% increase), Accidental poisoning (7 excess, a 31.8% increase), and Homicide and probable homicide (7 excess, an 18.4% increase).
Numbers from a new ONS release looking at excess deaths over the pandemic.

I will take a look at some more of the detail and tweet out more highlights.

🚨🚨 It is estimated that between 80% to 90% of children aged 8 to 11 in England have antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, the specific virus that causes #Covid19.

➡️ Government should offer antibody tests for children for parents considering vaccines Image
Data here -> ons.gov.uk/releases/coron…

8 year olds estimate - 81.5%
Age 9 - 84.3%
Age 10 - 87.0%
Age 11 - 89.3%

Data comes from a survey of children where blood samples are taken.
My recent blog talks through the JCVI data in their statement on vaccines for 5 to 11 year olds.

They reaffirmed Covid is very low risk to children.

🚨🚨 Continue to see a marginal fall in number of patients with Covid-19 on ventilated beds in England

➡️ Patients in general beds with Covid have risen the past week predominantly among those aged 65 and over

Up to 58% of patients with Covid are primarily in for other reasons
The hospital admission rate with Covid-19 per 100k has risen over the past week in those aged 85 and over, who are most vulnerable.

This coincides with more of this age group also testing positive for the virus in the community.
Latest data on critical care shows that there are almost 4 times as many unoccupied beds as there are Covid patients
