This was the so-called 'rabbit out of the hat' moment…

The chancellor announced that the basic rate of income tax will be cut from 20p to 19p in the pound before the end of this parliament - 2024

🗣 How did the opposition respond to the spring statement?

Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves says: "The truth is, people can no longer afford the Conservatives."

Here’s some analysis from our correspondents.

Economics and Data Editor @EdConwaySky says there were some "giveaways" in the spring statement, but nothing to compensate people for the wider fall in disposable incomes across the country

In the face of the biggest standards-of-living crisis in living memory, is a vague tax plan really the remedy the British public are crying out for? writes Economics and Data Editor @EdConwaySky, in response to Rishi Sunak's spring statement

@EdConwaySky If the last election was defined by Brexit, the government's handling of the cost of living crisis in the coming months could define the next, writes Sky's Political editor @BethRigby, as she reflects on the mini budget

New figures have revealed more detail about the number of people who died during the #COVID19 pandemic.

Sky News analysis shows how many lost their lives, where most deaths took place, and where there were fewer deaths than usual 👇
Between March 2020 and December 2021, 133,623 more people died in England and Wales compared to the average in those months from 2015-2019, that figure is known as 'excess deaths'.

More than a third occurred in the second month of the pandemic, April 2020 trib.al/LMQxohd Image
If you remove the people who died from COVID, there were actually 7,401 fewer deaths than would be expected during the same time frame.

11,552 fewer women died, compared to the average of 2015-19, but an extra 4,150 men died

The average tank of fuel now costs almost £90, up by about £33 compared to May 2020 ⛽

Chancellor Rishi Sunak is expected to cut fuel duty by 5p in his spring statement – but how much will this help at the pump?
How much have prices at the pump changed?

Just under two years ago, petrol prices reached a four-year low during the COVID pandemic.

But recently, wholesale costs have been rising sharply, partly due to Russia’s war in Ukraine

What makes up the cost of fuel?

Tax is a significant proportion of the cost – with fuel duty included in the overall price. Fuel duty has been frozen at 57.95 pence per litre since 2011.

On top of this, 20% VAT is added to the overall fuel bill

Nations must act now before it is ‘too late’

Ukraine's president has told Sky News that his country cannot stop the war against Russia on its own and that millions could die if the world does not act now to stop the bombing

Speaking to Sky News' @AlexCrawfordSky inside the leader's office in Ukraine's capital city, Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated his call for the West to impose a no-fly zone
He accused countries of being indecisive on the issue of "closing" the skies against what he called "the Nazis" and said of Western nations: "You can't decide to close or not to close... you can't decide.

"If you are united against the Nazis and this terror, you have to close."
