There's been a trend about #Horriblebosses in the tech space and the revelations are quite shocking. So I thought to share my 2 cents on this topic because if other bosses are not careful, the calling out may soon snowball into more sector #HorribleBosses #Thread
I have worked in the banking sector & I must say throughout my career as an employee I was privileged to work with good bosses. However, I was surrounded by people who had horrid stories to tell about their bosses and I must say this has been damaging to their mental health.
I strongly believe that the impeccable skill of Leadership is grossly underestimated by most institutions in sub saharan Africa. The assumption is that leadership is a position and because "I have worked hard to get there, I must make those beneath me suffer."
The reason this happens is because people do not submit themselves to superior learning; they are always chasing performance/profit at the expense of people. They forget that the display of these leadership skills enrich and empower their people to deliver superlative results
You can have a position yet not be the leader. The leader is the one who *inspires* his people to *willingly* follow. Observe that I said inspire and not coerce or force. Invariably if you have a habit of raising your voice, using force to get followership, you are a ruler.
6. Your presence should elicit inspiration from your team. If it breeds fear & intimidation, there's a challenge. If you go on vacation & the positive emotional energy of the team rises, & when you resume the environment is tensed, you should check yourself.
As a leader, there is an extent of impact you can have such that before you make a request, your people proactively elicit it & stake their necks on the line to execute even these "unexpressed" desires. It is the seed of impact that produces this effect of influence.
Leaders should not only produce followers. Humans are not zombies, they are carriers of creativity. Leaders should produce more leaders, who are given the leeway (with guidance) to co-create with you & bring the collective dream of the institution to pass.
Take time to observe each member of your team. What are their current desires, their current needs & their aspirations? Note - the answer to these questions may have nothing to do with work. "How can you be the greatest positive impact in these identified areas".
Commit to the practice of impacting whilst create a safe space for your team members to work. Commit to a routine of behaviours that serves the highest good to each one of them and I can guarantee you, they will produce truly astounding results for the institution.
Hope this helps you as a Leader? Feel free to share
