We're working through the budget papers and compiling a report. Some of our interesting findings thus far are in the following 🧵:

#auspol #auslaw

1/
The Ombudsman has had a year on year cut of $2.38m (or 4.03%).

What does it do?

It investigates complaints from the public about decisions made by the Federal Government and agencies.

2/
The Administrative Appeals Tribunal has had a year on year cut of $5.65m (or 2.35%).

What does the AAT do?

It investigates the merits of decisions. I.e. If your FOI comes back blank you can go to the AAT to appeal.

3/
Australian Law Reform Commission has had a year on year cut of $377k (or 9.41%).

What does the ALRC do?

It provides recommendations for law reform to Government on issues referred to it by the Attorney-General of Australia.

4/
Keep an eye out for our upcoming paper that will look at the funding of accountability institutions over the last 10 years in real terms.

5/
One more:

In 2019/20 a Federal ICAC was allocated $100m over 4 years

The proposed model has been heavily criticised and the Gov 'ran out of time' to put it to parliament.

This time it is $64m over 4 years

Our research indicates for a Federal ICAC needs $100m/year
