UKSC judges Lords Reed & Hodge have resigned with immediate effect from Hong Kong’s Court of Final Appeal - saying they can’t continue to sit without appearing to endorse an administration which has departed from political freedom & freedom of expression. supremecourt.uk/news/role-of-u…
Many are asking - why now?
Foreign Sec Truss has claimed responsibility in saying the “benefit they bring to the court as excellent jurors is now outweighed by the risk of legitimising a system that enforces Beijing’s laws, which are being used as a tool of oppression.”
Truss: UK govt has withdrawn political support for British judges sitting on Hong Kong’s top court. She expressly cites unjustified threats made by HK authorities to @hk_watch under the #NSL.
The threats, like the sanctions against UK lawyers & parliamentarians are outrageous.
For anyone wanting more background on Hong Kong’s National Security Law #NSL, this was my take back in summer 2020. The pace of change since then, shrinking further and further the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong citizens, has been beyond alarming.
Many are asking me - what about the others? Well, for what my opinion is worth on this, I would be surprised if this very significant step - a considerable departure from the public position last summer - did not give the others very serious pause for thought.
See also this message from the UK Consul General in Hong Kong, Brian Davidson:
He adds the “National Security Law also violates the high degree of autonomy of executive and legislative powers and independent judicial authority, provided for in the Joint Declaration.”
ICJ ordered the following provisional measures - the Russian Federation:-
1. shall immediately suspend the military operation in the territory of Ukraine
2. Shall ensure any military/irregular armed units directed or supported by it..take no steps to further such operation. 👇🏼

Not least in a pandemic, in a climate crisis, in a cost of living crisis, in a grave international crisis, in the Brexit crisis created by those running the country.
In all seriousness, someone just told @Channel4News that the Prime Minister was “ambushed with cake”.
With a straight face.
The lack of direction, leadership, integrity and focus at the heart of government is the clear fault and responsibility of the Prime Minister.
Thank you to all the peers who are showing great commitment & integrity as they stay late to knock back some of the disturbing provisions in the #PolicingBill, despite govt attempts to prevent scrutiny by scheduling.
This is no way to run a democracy. But the govt knows that.
No pretence, no disguise left. Hong King’s National Security Law is being used as a tool to silence expression, crush dissent. One of HK’s most senior barristers is arrested again, as part of another crackdown, this time on @StandNewsHK where she was formerly a board member.
Nothing to see here. Only Hong Kong’s second most senior politician trampling over a free press, protected under Hong Kong’s Basic Law by the ICCPR, without qualms.
#Egypt BHRC considers the continued prosecution & detention of activist @alaa, human rights lawyer Mohammed El Baqer & blogger Mohamed Oxygen are emblematic of the profound rule of law crisis.
Here is Laila Soueif in the @nytimes y’day on her jailed son.
Verdicts today.
We @BarHumanRights stand w/ the legal community & in solidarity with human rights lawyer Mohammed El Baqer, founder of Adalah Centre for Rights & Freedoms, as he awaits a verdict today in Egypt’s security court, on baseless charges. His client, @alaa & Oxygen should all be freed.
