Last year, Florida enacted voter suppression law #SB90, a sweeping piece of legislation that affected many aspects of voting. 4 lawsuits were quickly filed to challenge the law.
"For voting officials, money from the private sector leading up to the 2020 election was a lifeline....But a year and a half later...[there are] efforts in dozens of states to ban the kind of financial help local election officials say saved them." npr.org/2022/03/31/108…
"Since voting ended in 2020, more than a dozen states — all with Republican-controlled state legislatures — have enacted laws that prevent local election officials from accepting donations like they did leading up to that election."
"Basically everyone in the elections community, including Epps-Johnson, wants these sorts of private grants to be unnecessary, regardless of whether they are legal.
'We have always agreed that the best way to fund election departments is robust, predictable public funding'"
🚨ALERT: Arkansas judge strikes down 4 voter suppression laws and blasts the state for passing laws based on "misinformation" and "fear-mongering" about voter fraud instead of facts. The state has appealed the decision. democracydocket.com/alerts/arkansa…

What exactly is going on with Ohio's legislative redistricting process? When will the Buckeye State have new General Assembly districts?
Here's what you need to know about what's happening with Ohio's legislative maps.👇🧵
In 2015, Ohio voters approved Article XI, an amendment to the state constitution that overhauled the legislative redistricting process and banned partisan gerrymandering in a provision called Section 6. Article XI also created the Ohio Redistricting Commission (ORC).
The ORC, not the state legislature, has the power to draw legislative maps. It is made up of the governor, secretary of state, auditor & two members appointed by each party in the Legislature. Currently, the partisan breakdown of the ORC is 5 Republicans & 2 Democrats.
🚨⚖️COURT ALERT: A trial challenging 4 voter suppression laws in Arkansas starts tomorrow.
Here's what you need to know.👇🧵
Arkansas is already a difficult state to vote in and ranked dead last for voter turnout in the 2020 elections. Black voters also have a lower turnout rate compared to the state average, an indication of systematic and decades-long voter suppression.
While AR's turnout rate in 2020 was still low — 54% turnout compared to a 67% national average — it was better than the state's turnout rates in other recent elections. And how did the AR Legislature respond to this increase in turnout? By passing 4 new voter suppression laws.
ICYMI: The North Carolina Supreme Court released its full opinion in lawsuits that struck down the state's congressional and legislative maps for partisan gerrymandering.
"Partisan gerrymandering creates the same harm as malapportionment, which has previously been held to violate the state constitution: some peoples’ votes have more power than others."
"But a legislative body can only reflect the will of the people if it is elected from districts that provide one person’s vote with substantially the same power as every other person’s vote."
