A Fano is a member of a non-political, non-religious community self-defense movement constituted out of ordinary citizens from all walks of life, religion, sex, age etc. - at times of organized attack. The name also applies to a group of Fanos. 1/5
Their most recent action was against #TPLF invasion of Amhara lands, looting, rape, and destruction between Summer and Fall of 2021.
In the past, they resisted Italian invasions, and past attacks by the then #TPLF-controlled Ethiopian Government for the 27 years until 2018. 2/5
Their resistance was re-invigorated after the botched abduction of the leader of the Wolkait-Tegede-Telemt Amhara Identity Advocacy Committee, Col. Demeke Zewdu (now vice governor of Wolkaite) in Gonder, which led to #TPLF downfall, coupled to the Oromo youth movement. 3/5
It is therefore apparent why those affiliated with the #TPLF and #OLF feel so terrible about, and work day and night to mischaracterize the FANO.
Some facts about the Fano:
- Fanos do not get payment from anyone, 4/5
- Fanos do not cross to any other jurisdiction even when attacks come across from the other side,
- Fanos do not attack unarmed civilians (in fact they protect them),
- Fanos arm themselves from their attackers.
First of all, the process is lengthy, until #UN agrees, budgets are approved & released, personnel are identified and sent over. #Ethiopia
2/4:
While we don't discount their investigation, the following are the risks:
- human & material evidences could be lost,
- priorities on the part of the organizations or the victims may change,
- there's is also a possibility of politics overriding the priorities/need.#Ethiopia
3/4:
Actions (not exhaustive, by any measure):

- fundraising efforts for the investigating teams, etc #Ethiopia
