One year, I had a grade 3 student in PE who was outgoing & loved to share her ideas & stories. When she came into grade six she was quiet & hid her face. She always wore her coat & would barely speak. When she did, it was almost inaudible. I was startled by this stark change. 🧵
I started working with mom right away, to figure out what went awry and why this girl was acting so differently. Mom said she became very concerned with her clothes over the summer and would stress about what to wear each day. 🧵
After doctor visits, conversations and repeated messages of love it was discovered that she was “counting calories” and eating less than half of what would be recommended for a child her age. The doctor, a counsellor and mom worked with her and slowly she began eating more. 🧵
Within a month of this, she started smiling more, asking questions, writing fantastic stories in LA and sharing her insights again. It was breathtaking to experience. Like a dark shroud had been lifted off of her and she could be herself again. 🧵
She told me she thought knowing the calories was healthy and that she was helping herself. Now she realized it was making her tired, and scared. Her smile and eagerness to share was a bright night at the end of a dark tunnel. 🧵
This #wellness#curriculum that @jkenney and @AdrianaLaGrange want us to start in September is damaging and harmful. I am afraid of what it will do if teachers deliver these messages to our elementary kids. 🧵
#Wellness is not weight and calories — it is harmony between mind, body and soul. It is enjoying being active, taking care of yourself, talking about emotions and how they affect us, learning to communicate with peers and finding your way in a chaotic world. 🧵
#Wellness should, by definition, make you feel well. Healthy. Whole. We need to #DitchTheDraft so that our children can continue to shine and grow and be themselves. This new #curriculum for PE & Wellness is damaging and archaic.

I’m a teacher. Over 10 years—mostly grade 6 and elementary Phys. Ed. People are scared. I get that. My friends and colleagues are asking if I am. And I am but not for the reasons they may think. 1/12 @AdrianaLaGrange@AlbertaEd@ATALocal55@albertateachers@alberta_moms
Covid scares me but so does cancer, car accidents, early on-set Alzheimer’s — and I can’t do anything about those things. Preventative things sure. But people get sick. People die. And schools have always been a dangerous place in terms of getting sick. 2/12
When my asthma was very severe my doctor had my seriously consider taking time off work because just being at school heightened my chances of getting and being hospitalized because of my poor respiratory system. 3/12
