❗️Blacklist Putin's Terrorist State

Images of some villages freed in #Kyiv region, specifically #Bucha, are devastating. Dead people lying outside of their houses, in what can only have been a “zachistka” - systemic execution of the men of each house. This is genocide. ⤵️

The least the West could do is formally recognize Vladimir Putin for what he is: an international criminal. If it does not, its longstanding commitments to the rule of law and basic human decency will be called into question.

Throughout Putin’s 22-year rule, Russia has repeatedly acted with impunity, blackmailing the world with the tacit threat of nuclear retaliation.

The international community has watched his regime ravage Chechnya and Georgia with the same kind of scorched-earth campaign that it is pursuing in Ukraine, illegally annex Crimea, and wage hybrid war against other countries around the world.

Russia was blacklisted in 2000 for its repeated failure to comply with international measures against money laundering, and was removed from the list in 2002 for progress in compliance.

Obviously, given the amount of information about money laundering and terrorism financing conducted by the Russian government, whatever progress occurred has been reversed.

And make no mistake: Russia’s actions in Ukraine constitute terrorism.

This heinous war crime must not be allowed to continue, and it is on the international community to act. No more Russian assets left overseas, no more Russian billionaires left unsanctioned, no more buying resources from Russian companies.

The reaction to this should be swift, precise and it should aim to cut Putin off from the rest of the world for as long as he remains in power in the Kremlin.
