The next time someone denies the use of a portable air cleaner in a classroom on a (false) basis that it might spread infection by moving air, or interfere with the HVAC system, show them this paper. @amandalhu @sameo416 (HT @Poppendieck).

When determining the amount of outdoor air provided to a space, ASHRAE Standard 62.1's Zone Air Distribution Effectiveness factors to account for the inefficiency of air delivery and mixing to provide outdoor air to the breathing zone. /2
For example, in heating mode, with a ceiling level supply and return, the effectiveness is only 0.8. So we need to provide 25% more outdoor air. (image: User's manual for 62.1-2010) /3
In this paper by @BrettCSinger1 “When an overhead HVAC system is in heating mode, it's important to add mechanical mixing to avoid stratification.” onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.11… /4
“Eliminating stratification is particularly important to ensuring that the benefits of outdoor air ventilation and central filtration are achieved in the room.” /5
“While mixing could be provided by portable fans, portable air cleaners provide substantial additional benefit by filtering as well as mixing the air and their use is recommended.” /6
In fact, without the extra mixing, some people may be exposed to infectious aerosols at 5-6 times what would be expected under fully mixed conditions! /7
In half of the classroom experiments a standing barrier was erected between the students and teacher. The mean exposure relative to perfectly mixed doubled with the barrier in place compared to without. /8 Figure S5. Classroom configuration with release at Teacher p
This experiment yet again shows why adding plexiglass into a room increases risk of transmission, confirming what was identified in responses to 500,000 survey respondents: /9
Here's a great thread and visual for why plexiglass barriers aren't helpful: /10
The only case where a portable air cleaner might increase risk is in a specialized situation like an AIIR (Airborne Infection Isolation Room) without a low-wall return. /11
So, just get the #filtration in the room! A #CorsiRosenthalBox can provide substantially faster cleaning than a portable air cleaner because the effectiveness is equal to filtration percent X flow. /12
Here's @healthyheating's simplified/idealized illustration of a #CorsiRosenthalBox in a classroom with a HVAC system: /13
Portable air cleaner or #CorsiRosenthalBox, just do it! Select the appropriate number of units to add up to the appropriate noise-limited filtration amount... /14
... while still being mindful of the cost, and other potential concerns from technology that acts on indoor air chemistry rather than simply removing particles from the air.
/15
The practical implications from Singer et al.'s paper “Measured influence of overhead HVAC on exposure to airborne contaminants from simulated speaking in a meeting and a classroom” onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.11… /16 Practical Implications Overhead HVAC systems, which are comm
Where might you see the effect of stratification, resulting in stagnant air, where effective ventilation is blocked by plexiglass? At an arena. /17
Both of these paragraphs from Health Canada @GovCanHealth need updating. Fans DO improve ventilation effectiveness, and portable air cleaners should be used in any situation indoors, not just when there isn't a ventilation system. canada.ca/en/public-heal… /18 Portable or ceiling fans, or single unit air conditioners ma

Insufficient ventilation at arena causes fog in the stagnant air over the ice between the plexiglass. CO₂ rose constantly without end until intermission, when we left, at 2000 ppm.
Great show! We wore our respirators, few others did. Some coughing behind and beside us.
Dew point was approximately 4.5°C
CO₂ in arena changeroom with a dozen skaters: First spike when changing, slow decay while vacant, then rises when changing again, slow decay while vacant, final spike when come back.
Only mask was on my daughter, a CA-N95 taped at the top to ensure fit.

The power was out this weekend so I decided to reclad the ELFSTRÖM in final permanent form: /1 Box fan with outlet shroud and box mounted on the inlet side
I used vinyl adhesive shelf liner to wrap the box. Still using painter's tape to mount the filter - makes it easy to change the filter and won't ruin the vinyl adhesive pattern. The filter gets sucked on when running anyway. /2
The box is mounted to the fan on the inside, making the outside connection tapeless. /3

Having a CO₂ meter with visible display can enable an educator to be a manual version of a demand-controlled ventilation system, with control over the indoor environment using windows (Source: Di Gilio et al 2021, pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34224708/) #COVIDCO2

@Billius27 If a CO₂ display was in my daughter's mechanically ventilated classroom, her teacher might have opened the windows, or moved to another room after seeing rising levels. Principal: waiting for parts to repair the HVAC system. Daughter developed common cold symptoms 48h later. Image
@Billius27 Here is one of many reasons WHY we want to monitor and take action on CO₂ concentrations:

Very exciting news on the #corsirosenthalbox front! @CorsIAQ & @CappaSnappa thanks for the (Elfstrom 2021) reference, it made my day! Some comments & questions follow: /1
"AHAM recommends that CADR is 2/3 of floor area" Yes, it's floor area = 1.55 x sqft. That's for 8' ceiling with 1 ACH residential outdoor air exchange, described in Annex E of AHAM AC-1 2020: /2
"Our method allows for determination of CADR values above the 450 CFM upper limit of the standard method AHAM 2014" Yes, larger test chambers are needed!
This has been updated, upper limit now 600 ± 10 CFM except for pollen which is 450 ± 25 CFM /3

The air cleaner purchased by @nseducation for schools has a Clean Air Delivery Rate almost HALF of a common retail unit and may create secondary products by reacting with gas phase contaminants in a poorly ventilated room using photocatalytic oxidation #nspoli /1 Guardian Beyond Air F159E: ...
As seen in the photo, it's not running on its highest setting. For #ventilationequity in non-mechanically ventilated classrooms, should be a min 15 CFM per person, or 375 CADR for 25 people, AND at an acceptable noise level. How many per classroom? #DoTheMath! /2
Don't get me wrong, any filtration is better than nothing! But it's a mere band-aid over a gaping wound.
A DIY $120 #corsirosenthalbox will beat the air cleaners purchased by @nseducation AND can be used in STEM lessons! See cleanarair.com /3 Screen capture of web site
