THREAD: This week marks the 20th commemoration of Israel’s brutal invasion of the #Jenin refugee camp & its 39-day military siege of Bethlehem, including shelling the Church of Nativity while 200 #Palestinians were trapped inside.
On April 3, 2002, the Israeli military began its violent invasion of the Jenin refugee camp. Killing dozens of #Palestinian women, children, & the elderly. Human rights groups document that Israel purposefully targeted Palestinian civilians & vital infrastructure.
Amounting to war crimes, during Israel’s 2002 invasion of Jenin, horrific reports emerged that the Israeli military deliberately targeted Palestinian civilians, including the elderly, those with disabilities, and even Palestinians trying to seek shelter and safety.
Palestinian homes and critical infrastructure were intentionally targeted by the Israeli military during the 2002 invasion of Jenin, decimating 35% of the city, turning 3,000 Palestinian refugees homeless once again.
Just miles away, on April 2, 2002, at 2 AM over 250 armed Israeli tanks, trucks, F-16 fighter jets, & apache gunships, raided the Bethlehem district, including nearby towns Beit Sahour & Beit Jala, placing the entire area under military siege for 39-days.
During Israel’s siege of Bethlehem, the military repeatedly shelled the Church of Nativity, filling it with teargas while 200 Palestinians & clergy were trapped inside. The Israeli military even targeted aid workers trying to provide humanitarian aid to those trapped inside.
At least 7 Palestinians were killed and hundreds were injured during Israel’s 2002 siege of Bethlehem. In an attempt to break the steadfastness of the city amid the siege, the Israeli military raided dozens of Palestinian homes to arrest Palestinian youth.
The siege of Bethlehem & Jenin massacre both took place during Israel's invasion of the West Bank from March 29-April 21, 2002, also raiding Ramallah, Nablus, Tulkarem & Qalqilya. At least 7k Palestinians were arrested & 497 Palestinians were killed by Israel during these attacks
In 2022, Israel’s systemic violence against #Palestinians only continues to intensify & is met with more impunity from the U.S. & international community. In March alone Israel killed 11 Palestinians, including 5 children just in 2022.

Ahmed Manasra has been in Israeli custody since 2015, when he was just 13 years old. For the last seven years, he’s been beaten, tortured, and interrogated by Israeli police. Palestinians are calling for his release.
In 2015, Israel accused Ahmed and his cousin, two children living under the daily violence of Israel’s military occupation, of attacking Israeli settlers illegally occupying their hometown of Jerusalem.
Israeli police shot and killed Ahmed’s cousin, 15-year-old Hassan Manasra, while Ahmed was hit by an Israeli vehicle and left bleeding from his head in the street while Israeli settlers surrounded him cursing and shouting, “Die! Die!”
19-month-old Palestinian baby Fatma Al-Masri died after Israel blocked her permit to leave Gaza to receive life-saving care.
Fatma was born in Gaza with a heart defect called VSD. With proper care, VSD patients usually have a normal life expectancy.
But Fatma's life was cut short by Israeli officials who prevented her from leaving Gaza, where Israel's suffocating blockade means hospitals do not have the means to give proper care to patients like Fatma.
THREAD: For journalists covering individual acts of violence in Israel, here are some important things to keep in mind:
1. Context is key.
These incidents don’t occur in a vacuum. Israel’s oppressive and violent military rule over millions of Palestinians is the main actor in these stories, and needs to be front and center in coverage.
Every aspect of Palestinian life is affected by Israel’s everyday violence. School, work, farming, travel, medical care—none of it is free from the violence of the government, military or settlers.
Today is Land Day, the 46th commemoration of when Palestinian citizens of Israel went on strike to protest against a plan to take a vast amount land from Palestinians and give it to Israeli Jews.
Land Day is a significant event in the history of the Palestinian collective, emphasizing Palestinian resistance and resilience.
The protests were a result of mass collective action, the first of its kind in Palestine. Israeli soldiers and police tried to repress the strikes and marches, killing six Palestinians, wounding a hundred others, and arresting hundreds more.
THREAD: Israel's daily violent actions affect every aspect of Palestinians' lives, and have devastated generations of Palestinian families.

1) We can’t separate individual acts of violence from the larger context of Israel’s oppression. That would be like starting a book at chapter 16.
2) Every day Israel’s military harms and kills Palestinians of all ages, including children, kicks Palestinian families out of their homes and steals more Palestinian land. Palestinians live in constant fear of being killed by an Israeli soldier or settler.
Rapper and Palestine solidarity campaigner @Lowkey0nline’s music highlights subjects such as the refugee crisis, racism, xenophobia, and Palestinian rights.
Due to his pro-Palestinian music, there has been a coordinated smear campaign targeting him and his career.
We Believe in Israel, a British pro-Israel lobby, is demanding that Spotify remove Lowkey’s discography from their streaming service, along with other pro-Palestinian and anti-Zionist music.
The lobby is attempting to silence Lowkey and stifle his music, which is growing in popularity. Lowkey’s three “Long Live Palestine” tracks have become anthems for the Palestine solidarity movement in the UK, garnering millions of views on YouTube.
