Within weeks of the US invasion of Iraq in March 2003, it became clear that the claim that Saddam Hussein's had developed weapons of mass destruction -- the critical justification of the war -- was a lie that had been concocted by the Bush administration. 1/ #Propaganda
The #NYTimes, which had propagated the WMD lies, manufactured, ex post facto, another justification for the war. On April 25, 2003, it published a front page photo of a skull, which it claimed was of a political prisoner murdered by the Iraqi regime. 2/
Two days later, on April 27, Thomas L. Friedman wrote a column titled, "The Meaning of a Skull." He claimed that the discovery of the skull rendered the issue of WMDs irrelevant. 3/
"As far as I'm concerned," Friedman declared, "we do not need to find any weapons of mass destruction to justify this war. That skull, and the thousands more that will be unearthed, are enough for me. 4/
"Mr. Bush doesn't owe the world any explanation for missing chemical weapons (even if it turns out the White House hyped the issue)." The apologist for Bush's criminal invasion continued: 5/
"Whether you were for or against this war, whether you preferred that the war be done with the U.N.'s approval or without it you have to feel good that right has triumphed over wrong. 6/
"America did the right thing here. It toppled one of the most evil regimes on the face of the earth, and I don't think we know even a fraction of how deep the evil went. ..So why isn't everyone celebrating this triumph?" 7/
This article is just one example of the countless columns in which Friedman and his colleagues have peddled disinformation and lies in the interest of US foreign policy. No, in the midst of another war propaganda campaign, this record should be kept in mind. 8/8

In the aftermath of World War I, there was extensive study of the immense role of #Propaganda in the mobilization of public support during four years of bloody conflict. It was recognized that all the conflicting states made use of propaganda. 1/ #Ukraine
The British sociologist Harold Lasswell's 1927 book, "Propaganda Technique in World War I", described propaganda as the "means of converting masses of people to desired view points," making use of "stories, rumors, reports, pictures and other forms of social communication." 2/
In an article entitled "World Propaganda War," published in The North American Review just 5 years before the outbreak of World War II, writer William E. Berchtold warned: 3/
Thomas Friedman's commentary on Ukraine continues a 30-year pattern of lying justifications for US imperialism. Back in 2003, after it became clear that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, Friedman concocted the claim that the evidence had been "scattered." 1/
He also attempted to shift attention away from non-existing WMDs, claiming that the US invasion was a necessary response to atrocities allegedly committed by Saddam Hussein. He wrote on Many 14, 2003: 2/
"So just as it is becoming...clear that many weapons sites -- including nuclear research sites -- which might have proved that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction, have been looted and the evidence scattered, the same is happening with sites of his human mass destruction." 3/
The current barrage of reports of Russian atrocities fall within the category of state-organized propaganda. Claims made by the Ukrainian government and NATO are accepted without a trace of independent verification. There are no reports of Ukrainian atrocities. 1/
The @nytimes is nothing other than an organ of state propaganda, working in tandem with the government intelligence agencies and providing legitimacy to whatever narrative serves the interests of US foreign policy. Its role in justifying the invasion of Iraq is well known. 2/
Its contribution to Bush's PR war prior to the 2003 invasion exemplified what the Columbia Journalism Review described as "a compliant press that uncritically repeated almost every fraudulent administration claim about the threat posed to America by Saddam Hussein." 3/
After 15 years of Quantitative Easing interventions, rich investors assume that the Federal Reserve will provide as much helicopter money as needed to bolster the market. "Moral hazard" is no more a concern than it was during the reign of Louis Philippe, as described by Marx: 1/
"The July Monarchy [1830-1848] was nothing other than a joint stock company for the exploitation of France's national wealth, whose dividends were divided among ministers, Chambers, 240,000 voters, and their adherents. Louis Philippe was the director of this company ... 2/
"Since the finance aristocracy made the laws... the same prostitution, the same shameless cheating, the same mania to get rich was repeated in every sphere...to get rich not by production, but by pocketing the already available wealth of others... 3/
Historian Omer Bartov's interview is another example of how easily academics are adapting their scholarship to government policy and media propaganda. Among Bartov's best known work is "Erased: Vanishing Traces of Jewish Galicia in Present-day Ukraine", published in 2007. 1/
The book, as described in a review published in The Journal of Modern History, "shows vividly how post-Soviet Ukrainians have 'erased' traces of Jewish existence in Galicia/western Ukraine before the Holocaust. 2/
"They have added insult to injury by honoring the memory and roles of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and Ukrainian nationalists in general in those very places were Jews were murdered, mostly by the Nazis but also by their Ukrainian collaborators. 3/
The CSIS, a leading imperialist think tank, has hosted a webinar on Russia's suppression of independent media. The webinar's announcement states: 1/
"Following the invasion of Ukraine, authorities in Russia have clamped down on independent media and tightened control of the Internet in an apparent effort to control the narrative about the war and prevent citizens from organizing against it." 2/
And how is this different from the situation in the United States and Europe? Facebook has just blocked access to a webinar on the NATO-Russia War, hosted by the Socialist Equality Party in Germany. 3/
