We challenge the view that continued reductions in prescription opioids will be the “key to ending this [overdose] epidemic”…
As if cutting prescriptions in half throughout the US the past decade has resulted in reduced overdose deaths 🧐🧐🧐
2️⃣:
We provide a nuanced discussion around the real impact of the 2016 CDC prescribing guidelines and emphasize the inherent risks when blanket metrics are used that evade patient centered care (ie. Arbitrary MEDD cutoffs).
We push back on the exhausting narrative around “the US using more Rx opioids than any country in the world”
We especially highlight the dangers around making simplistic statements like this without accounting for worldwide health access disparities and opioid preferences.
4️⃣:
We review (briefly) the actual evidence associated with long term use of opioids for pain, and do not just rely on one greatly flawed study as a resource.
